Can Britain feed itself?

i wrote about the feed.
Theres a lot of crap quality feed though is there not? im fairly sure theres also a lot in storage in numerous places, much like theres a lot of food generally stored all over.
i think we could get by, just not easily.
The amount we have stockpiled etc.

Yes we can feed ourselves easily - farming methods are far more intensive than during the war and even if it meant turning over more land to agriculture or rationing of some sort it could be easily achieved.

The thing that would trip us up is energy / fuel - intensive farming (as well as everything else) uses loads of it and we don't have much since they shut the pits.

We import far more than we grow at home but this is mostly becuase our tastes have become more exotic as our wealth has increased.

Hmm i think there is abit of imagination in play there, stockpiled ? where ? every large food chains supply chain would be empty in a week, it gets delivered that often.

Feed also would be empty within a couple of weeks/month tops, using up what there is now

AGGGGhhhhhhh what are you ALL one about ? lol :p

Here is some quick maths :

UK land area is around 244 820km square

UK population is around 61 million

SO assuming we had every single bit of land there is available to farm on gives us:

244 820 / 61 million = 0.00401344262 or 0.004KM of land per person in the UK,

THIS IS NOT ENOUGH TO GROW FOOD ON FOR 1 PERSON, NO WHERE NEAR, as im sure you can tell, 400 square CM patch of soil, well not even soil, just land, try and sustain yourself on 400cm square patch of dirt.

So hopefully now you can all understand were royally screwed should our food get cut off

EDIT: Last thing I read put the figure at around 2 square KM per person is required, is sustainable, and would keep said human alive assuming they worked hard on it

Your post above is not only wrong but misleading -- factor actual population density and distribution into it please.

LOL. Might want to re-do your sums. ;)

250,000km^2 / 61million people = 0.004 km^2

1km^2 = 1000 m x 1000m = 1 million square metres

Each person actually has 4000 square metres, or approximately 63m x 63m to support themselves. And that's actually equivalent to an acre each.

Still not enough land then :(, and my quick summage does suck, haha

Anyways we dont have anywhere near that amount of free land, so its gonna be wayy less than an acre

Still not enough? there are such things as population centres you know, and actual density of population in such places would be a major factor in how much land is actually available for agriculture.

Yes, we have great weather for growing food, plenty of land and great farmers, its just cheaper to buy food in from abroad.

Last time I looked Rice was not part of the British staple diet.

Oh and I read about farming vertical, which means 10 times more produce for tenth of the space it would need if horizontal farming.

Vertical farming is a conceptual form of agriculture done in urban high-rises. In these high-rises (variously called "farmscrapers,"[1]) food such as fruit, vegetables, fish, and livestock can be raised by using greenhouse growing methods and recycled resources year-round, allowing cities of the future to become self-sufficient.
