Can employers/uni etc. tell what gcses you have?

can someone link me to some evidence to show him since hes being a actual idiot.

Link you to some evidence? it will vary for different employers employers.

tis just common sense tbh... does the employer conduct background checks or do you hand the certificates in to the hr girl to photocopy nd put on file - it will work at some places won't work at others... tis silly and risky to try it IMO

your friends stunt wouldn't have worked at my current employer - they hire an outside agency to do a background check on everything from employment history to education to credit ratings etc..

previous employer though I just handed the certs to the HR girl and she took a photocopy... doubtful that she phoned up the various exam boards... I reckon his stunt might have worked there.

Surely exam boards must receive your consent before they give out your grades to potential employers?

I can't see how giving out your grades willy nilly to anyone who enquires isn't a breach of the Data Protection Act.

dunno - I mean if someone is phoning up and saying I have a certificate in front of me with candidate number 1234abcd, name joe smith and stating an A in GCSE X can you confirm that this is a genuine certificate presumably they ought to be able to answer - you've already been handed the personal data you just want to confirm that the certificate is valid - they ought to be able to answer no if its not valid without actually revealing any personal data?

IIRC we had to sign a form at my current job giving the security company permission to conduct the checks but I'd have assumed that simply checking a certificate is valid (which would require you to already have the information present on the certificate) would be ok. Its not like you're phoning up saying 'please tell me what joe smith's gcse grades are'

I have a (completely unverified). Feeling that it's an offence to put incorrect information on your cv when you're presenting it.

I think universities would likely verify it, employers is probably more pot luck and dependent on the nature of the job (e.g. jobs requiring security clearance or other background checks are more likely to do so).

Out of interest Radox, how did your friend get on?

I can confirm that employers have photocopied my exam certificates during interview stage. Because I write the same grades on my applications too, I presume that they must check the certificates, otherwise what was the point in obtaining my grades in 2 different pieces of paperwork?

As for consent with exam boards, they can just refer to candidate and centre number without needing the name. It's like with NHS numbers.

I suspect it depends on the job. If you're applying to be a street sweeper then lying about a few GCSE's is hardly likely to matter much. They're extremely unlikely to check up on you.

If on the other hand you're applying for the job of a neurosurgeon they might just want to make a few background checks.

Mind you, there have been stories of people posing as doctors and getting away with it for years so it does make you wonder...

I remember a friend of mine from down the road telling me that she never did any GCSE's and she stopped going to school when she was 15, purely because she hated school with a passion. Anyway all the jobs she has had in the past she has always stated on her CV that she has got 6 GCSE's all grade B's and C's. Not one of the the places she worked at never checked up on her qualifications. She quit school 20 years ago but do some employers really think that you would still have your GCSE certs years after you finished school?

Liam

erm yeah...

why would anyone think its a good idea to throw away education certs?

Yes, I still have all mine (I'm 37).

I still have mine too. Still in pristine condition in the red hardback leather folder they were presented to me in when I left compulsory education.

Similar to this one (mine doesn't have the Welsh on it)

It's treated just as important as every other important document I have about me eg Birth Cert etc.

Same here.

Bloke is totally unqualified for his job, but has been with the same company for 14 years now and is currently Managing Director.

He's happy to buy me a pint or 10 when I see him around town, he knows that I know what he did.... ;)

and what's this prove? grades don't mean **** kids.

I've heard of fair few cases poking around like that. If he does his job right who cares.

Very easy to fool employers. The simple fact is, the majority are too lazy to check up on the employee. I was reading one story a few months back about an airline pilot who printed off fake certificates and worked as an airline pilot flying commercial jets for 15 years, before eventually being found out. Now if he can do that then you can be pretty sure anything else is possible!
