Can games be too long?

Yea and you mentioned one game skyrim that is long and i am saying most games are not as long as skyrim.

COD, BF, uncharted, Halo's etc are all short games.

You cant expect most RPG to be only 10-20 hours long. RPG;s are games that tend to be long epic ones. think all the way back to the early final fantasy games.

FF7 came with 4 disks mate and the last BOSS literately took some people 4-5 hours to beat him

Where did I say anything about average game length? That isn't the topic for discussion at all.

Whatever game you're playing, it'd better be worth it because you could have spent that time working, or anything else.

If you're just collecting digital rabbit skins, there's probably something wrong with you.

Inspired by recent articles about Kingdoms of Amalur's speed run being over 200 hours long.

Personally I don't have as much time to game now as I did, I've played 88 hours of Skyrim and I still feel like I've barely scraped the surface. Does anyone else feel that some games are getting too long?

I'd much rather have a 20-30 hour game that had finely crafted story/quests throughout rather than a 200-300 hour game that is around 75% copy and paste quests or immense repetition for levelling.

It depends what type of game it is. As mentioned above, an open world should always have tons of content and a potential of hundreds of hours as that's just the genre...

With Skyrim you can play purely the main quest if you want which really isn't long at all. Because of the way levelling works, you can play it for as long as you want.

200+ hours on the main storyline might be a bit long, but we'll see. Depends how good the story is. Loved the gameplay & demo, so hopefully the main storyline won't get stale.

Hate finding new games with 5/6 hours of content, such a rip off.

I expect a game to be 20/30 hour's at a min really as too many developers get away with releasing something half finished.

Skyrim has been 50 odd hours so far and iv been loving it!

uncharted games are only about 10 hours long if u take your time but if u know what you are doing you can complete it in 6 hours easily.

At the end of the day, a game is only too long for if you feel bored of playing it but if you dont, you will spend 100's of hours in a game like forza or skyrim

Games that are 4-6 hours for the single player campaign just take the ****. Its REALLY annoying that games are even allowed to get sold with that much single player content and everything is focused on multiplayer.

So you're talking speed run throughs? Which isnt really the topic is it.

10 hours is about what it takes the average person to beat the game.

Talking speed run throughs is something entirely different. for instance, Final Fantasy 7 can be beaten in under 9 hours. This includes opening the tray to skip FMVs. Again, Not really a real example of how long a game lasts.

the only single player games i even contemplate buying and it's been the same for about 10 years now is GTA / Saint's Row / Red Dead Redemption and possibly Gear's of War (i haven't used my 360 in ages). I don't find single player appealing, multiplayer is just far more satisfying.

na, on a speed through, u can complete it in about 3 hours. 10 hours is not too bad but imo there seems to be more games that are around the 4-hour mark.

It depends on the genra though. You cant expect a game like skryim to be only 10 hours long. that would **** off a lot of people. RPG games tend to be time consuming absorbing games with length storylines and plenty of stuff to do in the game.

As i have said before, if you think a particular game is too long, say for example skyrim, then you are not enjoying the game. Its as simple as that really.

There is no define value of how long a game should last. If you REALLY enjoy the game, you wouldnt get bored of it.

Me, i am bored of BF3's MP whilt others have put in 100+hours on the MP.

What does that indicate? it indicates that to me BF3 is not a great game as i got easily bored whilst people who have spent 100+ hours aint going to complain that the game lacks replay value etc.

You would never be able to please everyone. An 80 hour game for a casual, once a week gamer could turn into a living nightmare and take over a year to complete. A 10 hour action packed game will be finished by some people in 2 days. Some people in 1 day.

 if you don't want to play the multiplayer then don't buy the game. If you buy it anyway, then it's your own choice not to play the multiplayer which as you said is the MAIN PART of the game. It's what you pay the £40 for. There are plenty of other titles which are single player only which you'd be much better off with.

Your post is similar to complaining about cake being overpriced when you only eat the icing off it.

Sorry but multiplayer aspects of games are not the Main Part. They're bonuses, extras.Call of duty, Battlefield. All of them have fantastic multiplayer sides, which are expanding and they are a massive part of the game, and some people do only play multiplayer. BUT the single player should always be a main focus.

Unless of course its an online game, Like warhawk or MAG..

Battlefield 2 had no single player campaign, nor did 1942. Why should SP be the focus of BF3?

It's crazy to think that the multiplayer isn't the main focus of that type of game. That's what millions of people spend thousands of hours playing.

If you don't want to pay for a MP game, buy one of the numerous story based games instead maybe? Don't buy a MP focused game and complain that the SP isn't up to scratch.

Why? It should be.

Just the same way people complain when Multiplayer isnt up to scratch.

Eh... i dunno why I'm even debating this :p Its all relative really. Multiplayer games last ages for the multiplayer lovers, Single player Action\Adventure games are generally short. Always have been. Meh
