Hey all,

Never really thought about this before and dont really intend on living off benefits for ever but here goes.

I have finished my full time course at college and have enrolled onto a Foundation Degree for September. This course is only part time (8 hours per week) and I am currently looking and applying for jobs to do along side this course but I am having no luck at the minute.

Does this mean I am legible to apply for Job Seekers Allowance?

I am 17 (18 in October), living with my parents and I am not employed at the minute so even once I am back to college unless I find a job I will only be doing 8 hours per week.

I would much rather have a job but the money until I get one would be handy and help me get by. I have had previous jobs such as working at Argos but was only an Xmas Temp was layed off after Xmas.

Any advice on places I could apply for a job would be helpful aswell, I have tried all the usual retailers but had no joy, it just seems they are not willing at employing anyone at the minute.

Thanks, Sam

Employment agencies, local newspapers, job centre.

What is it with students not being able to use some common sense!!!!

You have picked the worst time for looking for a job mate, especially in retail. Summer holidays are beginning and everyones looking for short work periods over the summer, therefore students looking for jobs has rocketed. We have hit the point in work where we dont even say drop a CV in for future reference, we just outright say 'no, nothing available'.

I spent all summer looking for my job, eventaually got one a week before going back to uni.

It is very difficult to find a summer job in some places due to the influx of the Polish. Why hire a student bum when you can hire a hard working polish man / women who will work 7 days a week without fail? Thats the case in Bristol at least, but I did land a job in the end.

I think this pretty much cuts you out of qualifying. The DirectGov website says: -

JSA for 16 and 17 year olds

If you're unemployed and 16 or 17 years old you may be able to get income-based JSA for a short amount of time. For example, this could be if you:

  • are forced to live away from your parents
  • will find it very hard to live without Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • are part of a couple responsible for a child
Contact your local Jobcentre Plus office for more information.

You can find the article I found it on here. I think the reasoning behind such requirements for 16-17 year olds is that your parents can probably claim child support while you are studying.

Don’t think you stand much chance of claiming Job Seekers if you're under 18 and still living with your parents. It's not poket money.

If he is looking for work, then whats the problem? Its what it is there for. It is called Job Seekers Allowance after all.

The OP has actually asked for advice to as to where he can look for a job, I just find it amazing that someone who is going to study a degree asks these sort of questions !!!

With all due respect to the OP, maybe he just lacks a bit of common sense, but that's no reason to jump on him for being a "doler". He asked for common ways of looking for a job, you could've offered some advice instead of going "ohnoes someone is after claiming doles, dey turk are tax monies!"

Anyone who is willing and able to work can claim it. If you are in education, or part-time work you can still claim it as long as you work/study for less than 16 hours per week.

Fair enough he should know better perhaps, but that wasn't the content of your original post...

quiet with the **** remarks - he doesnt want/need them and I dont need to waste my time reading them.

check your local job centre as well as www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk for jobs. also www.timesonline.co.uk and google "part time jobs in <area>" or something similar.

you should find something. still enquire about jsa, tell them your whole position - dont just say "Im a student" or they will cut you out there and then - say you are doing under 16 hours study but have been recommended not to do many work hours (your uni will recommend no more than 13 hours a week) as the rest of your free time (double your in uni study time) is meant for external study.

you may apply for student loan - means or non means tested (test on how much parents earn etc) this will be a good source of income if you cant stabalise yourself and I recommend to anyone as it lessens the need to work and claim jsa/income support.

gl dude and dont pay any attention to the alpha's on here -_-

Thanks for the support guys.

As to the comments basically calling me a scrounger, I am nothing of the sort, I have never claimed any benefits in my life (never got EMA at College) and have worked in the past and loved my job.

I search every day for a part time job but as other people have said its really hard to find one suitable at the minute.

So JSA is out of the question because I am 17?

I will continue my search for a job then and get myself out there tomorrow and hand a few more CV's in.

wtf... I started looking for a job a few days ago and now have 6 to choose from, you must have a really crap cv :p

There is nothing wrong whatsoever with claiming benefits to help you through a rough patch - that's what it's there for. It's only bad if you live on it.

If you have a job/stable finances it's easy to take the high ground, but I doubt there are many people here who will make it though their whole life without claiming some kind of benefit at some point.

I have just been looking on the goverment website and noticed you can claim JSA from 16 (presumably after you leave school). I am going to give them a call tomorrow.

Just to clear things up, I would much rather have a job but finding one is easiest said than done so JSA will help at the minute.
