Hi

Well as the title states, I am looking to block access to a drive on my media server based upon an IP or MAC address.

The 'server's' OS is Win XP Pro x64.

I know I can set up usernames etc, but the device accessing the drive is a Popcorn hour, therefore, the username/password is usually kept static.

Thanks

Phil

Is this at home and how many users? My thinking is - wouldn't it be better to maintain a list of allowed users rather than a list of blocked users. If you have a firewall installed on the server, they usually have trusted/untrusted settings for IP or MAC. As an example, I know Norton allows trusted and untrusted by IP or MAC address, so perhaps you have something similar?
Also, if you're using DHCP, the IP address could change, so you might end up blocking the wrong client?

If you can access their windows folder you could edit the HOSTS file on the PC that's accessing it and point your IP to something totally random using it. Whenever they try to get to your IP it'll be fired off to said random site.

Hi, thanks for the replies. Just to confirm, this is a home network, nothing special, just a few PCs acting as servers etc in a workgroup.

Also, its not a PC accessing the drive, its a Popcorn Hour (a media streamer).

Actually, I've just thought on, I suppose I could set up a dedicated account for the media streamer to use, which doesn't have access to that particular drive....hmmmm, wish I'd thought of that earlier.

Thanks guys.
