I'm wondering if this works in theory. Insurance company sells car to breakers, breaker then sell parts. Will they sell me my audio back?

It seemed a foreign concept to them when I asked them...

Generally, you just take your stuff out before the insurance pays up.

I remember my mom rolled her car a few years back (how the hell can 3 large asian women roll a sodding micra :p ), and we were asked to goto the breakers yard to pick our belongings up.

I can't tell whether its damaged or not and I'd have to dissect the doors. This would also lead to complications.

They're going to sell the bits anyway, so why not sell them back to me?

I chaffing hope not, I had the crash a considerable distance from here.

They are your items so you shouldnt have to buy them back, unless the insurance company is paying you for them in the final fee?

Your insurance company do not own the car until they have paid out so you just have to time collecting your belongings from the vehicle.

There is also the problem of whether I will get time to take the items... also, I don't want to open the doors up.

And my question stands - the audio is worth quite a bit and will likely be sold by the salvagers, why cant they sell it to me?

If you contact them and say you want to buy it I don't see any reason why you can't buy it.

Unless your insurance is paying out for the audio it belongs to you anyway?

The insurance company may end up paying for the audio. I don't know what condition its in, where it will be taken to or whether there will be time to collect...

I'm curious as to whether I can recover the audio from the breakers if the insurance company buys it, sells it to breakers.

Find out exactly where the car is by ringing up your insurance company.
If they are not willing to disclose where the car is then just make up a story like you left some personal belongins in the car such as trainers or your gym stuff in the boot.

Go to where ever the car is, usually a recovery yard. e.g. if your car was recovered by Ontime at the scene of the accident then it is likely to still be there.

Get your stuff back and take some useful bits you may need. e.g. Headlights you can sell on Ebay for a bit, gearknob, headunit adaptor fascia (if your car needed one) etc.

Until you get a cheque from the insruance company the car is legally yours and you can do what you want to it! (within reason).

It may not even get taken out by the breakers, depends what cat write off it is. The insurance company themselfs wont touch audio they just want rid of the car.

One of my mates dad's does up crashed cars as a business, we find all sorts of things in the cars and some really good audio.

What happens to the audio?

If its really good my mate sometimes puts it in his car and the same with people that work at the garage i think. Depends what its like if its just a head unit probs just gets left in for the person that buys the car when it is fixed

Is that what you meant?

most salvage is auctioned now so the head unit amps etc will be removed and no doubt vanish.
as stated the car belongs to you ,until the final settlement figure is agreed. if you know what your audio is worth, then specify that amount is what you require above and beyond the settlement figure on the car.
if you dont have time to remove the items them arrange a local audio company, to remove it for you, (obviously they will charge, but at least the equipment will be removed properly , not just be hacked out).
also bear in mind the insurance will require all old audio to be included in the vehicle.
as regards removing other items such as headlights etc....thats just tosh. remember the insurance is paying for a complete car, all be it damaged.

when the FIL recentley wrote his focus off we were tasked with the removal off everything that was additionally fitted even the alarm and the reversing sensors, and the locking wheel nuts.

why havent you found out where the car is and taken your sound system out by now?!!!! you dont want to be buying it back if you dont have to...

Are you covered for your in car entertainment?.... if not.. then most insurance covers it upto a max of £150 i think.... so if you aint covered seperately for it.. id go and get is quick if i was you.

Car audio is yours, long as the car has oem stuff fitted its not an issue, unless you have stated you have highend stuff fitted and have insurance for it.

Placing bets its all already been robbed tbh.
