As title.

I got made redundant at the end of April, I have been unable to start work as I have been finishing off a part time course.

However, now that is over with can I claim JSA despite having a job lined up to begin in July?

Anyway, reason I ask is because my parents seem to think i may be entitled but i'm not too sure.

I would be amazed if i can as i got a redundancy package and also got some savings.

Thanks in advance

Yes. You can claim it until the job starts, though your claim may be reduced by your redundancy money and savings. You'll just have to explain to them that you don't want to go on all the "Get a job, losers" courses with the great unwashed.

I'm sure you could, but with the redundancy package and savings you have you may only be entitled to have your N.I. contributions paid.

But I wouldn't tell them about the job you have lined up.

Depends...
how much savings do you have?
JSA/housing etc will usually want to see 3 months bank statements. Iirc it was either 8 or 16k worth of monies and you can still claim - you may or may not have your benefit means tested on these figures, you'd have to ask.
As for the job line up in july; on the terms of your jsa you'd have to be actively seeking work anyway. So that's up to you I guess.
But if you don't ask, then you don't get.

You've paid tax and NI through work, enough to entitle you to contribution based jsa most likely. If nothing else, you should get your NI stamp paid whilst you are not working.

One of the conditions of claiming JSA is that you are A) Able to work and B) Actively looking for work.

So no. Technically if you already have a job lined up, you can't claim UNLESS you are looking for work to bridge the gap.

If you are planning on not working until your new job starts you are not eligible for JSA.

Not saying you can't lie about it, but technically you shouldn't be claiming.

The clue is in the name... JOB SEEKERS Allowance.

I wonder if I should have been claiming JSA throughout the length of my course. I'm technically "job seeking" by applying for training contracts and my course isn't government run and I don't receive bursaries or grants or government funded loans or anything.
