Basically i'm trying to fetch 11 gigs worth of itunes off a laptop HD and i can't do it via the network because the lappy is drenched in viri and simply wont have it. So i thought to myself, why not simply get the HD out of lappy and chuck it into the pc and grab them that way.. Alas thought the pins in the IDE cable don't fit. So, will it run on the floppy cable, or indeed is there a cable which i can buy that will convert it?.
Cheers, Ben :).

You can get adapters that will supply the 2.5inch HD with the standard IDE cable and the molex connector.

I do happen to have one lying around, so if you only need to use it once, you can borrow it (you have good OcUK Trust ;) ). Email me if you want to borrow it.

or another solution might be:-

1) download and burn a linux boot disk iso - something like KNOPPIX would do it.
2) boot the laptop with the boot disc
3) transfer the files over the net - probably need to kick start samba

might be something you could try quicker and cheaper than getting hold of an adapter. and even if you can't get it to work you'll gain a linux boot disk which might one day come in as a rescue disk to fix a borked HDD.

11GB over the Ethernet would be no fun in the first place - you'd be there for a while. Also, you would be able to do a virus scan on the laptop HD when it is attached to the desktop through the adapter, and possibly solving the virus problems while you're at it too.

I've already offered to lend him an adapter, so it will only cost 2x First Class stamps :)
