Hi

Can I connect to my local area network when I'm out and about (i.e - not inside my LAN)?

I have windows server 2003 currently running with a windows vista ultimate machine connecting to it using DNS / Active Directory (all properly working!)

Cheers

cheers!!!!

Erm, one thing they don't seem to explain is how do i find out what IP address to connect into that isn't a local IP address

I'm on AOL and they give me an IP of: 172.159.179.115

I tried entering this as host name / IP address but it doesn't connect, yet when I enter server.mynetwork.com it works

any ideas? cheers

You will have to know the IP adddress of the lan you are trying to connect to first I would have thought.

well yeah I know that it's 192.168.0.2 but if im outside of my LAN and enter that it's not going to work is it?

Doesn't it have to be an external IP address?

If so, where do I find this / how do I set it up?

Are you trying to connect to the external IP while you are on the LAN? If so that probably won't work. You need to test it from an EXTERNAL connection.

You will need to look at somthing called dynamic dns, since AOL is likly to give you a new IP address everytime your internet is connnected, this will let you connect to a name rather than ip

is this really a problem though if my connection is not disconnected, as I've had this particular IP address for quite a while now

Best to set up something like Dyndns anyway, just in case it changes. Sods law says it's most likely to change when you need it the most so...
