Can I create a small LAN with Wifi Router?

As many of my work colleagues play Call of Duty on their iphones I though it would be kinda cool if you we could have more that a 2 player using the bluetooth. But for this is say its needs a wireless connection.

So my question is - Can I simply buy a cheap router, plug it in and connect it to the iphones to have a small Wifi LAN?

Yes.

Or if you have a Windows 7 laptop you can create an ADHOC wifi network on there for no extra outlay.

or you can buy one of the new mini wifi AP's. TPLink do them.
