OK can i take out a contract tomorrow in my name, and then when my wife's number is available in 10 days time port that number over?

i know it would be far easier to wait or to take it in my wife's name, but there is a certain phone hopefully released tomorrow that i want

It's best to check it with the network. From a year or two ago, only certain networks would allow a number to be ported post contract start up. Others allowed number ports at any time.

I don't know about now though...

best talk to the networks to check, I was told it was fine to ask for my puc code, transfer number to a payg sim, then transfer it again in a couple of days

Afaik with the same network you cant move a number contract to contact. It would need to go to a payg sim card first. Cross network you dont get this problem.
