Can I flash my VGA BIOS?

I have just bought a HP Envy 17 1190ea laptop which has a 5850m gpu.

However the stock clock is 500mhz (amd stock is 625mhz) they did this due to overheating but i always use my cooling pad at home so I would like to clock it higher.

The stock bios has the voltage at 0.9v instead of 1.0-1.1v. I have enabled unofficial overclocking on msi afterburner so have potential to overclock the card but the highest it will go is 560mhz at 0.9v with no way of overvolting at the moment (ticking the box does not work).

I guess my question is, because the gpu is soldered to the motherboard will a vga bios flash even work? I have stock 5850m bios ready but not sure whether or not to go ahead?

Regards, Greg.

No idea if this can be done, Just an idea to get you started
Try dumping the bios to file. If you can read the bios to a file then maybe it can be modded and flashed back.....just a thought

Well i can dump the bios to a file using gpu-z. However when using a bios editor (RBE) i cannot alter and voltage settings. Also just flashed the system bios and noticed this also changed the vga bios version. This would normally mean that the vga bios is integrated into the system bios. Would that mean it cannot be flashed independently?

I wouldn't risk it, since it's part of the motherboard itself, it's a very risky thing to do. You could risk bricking the whole thing. Leave the VGA BIOS as it is, it seems to be part of the main BIOS.

Yea thats what im thinking, really REALLY annoys me though that the card at normal voltage can happily run at 740+MHz but mine will be stuck at just over 500MHz! Stupid HP!

Well i bit the bullet and tryed it and guess what!!???......

It bricked it :(, in the process of recovering the bios at the moment, not easy at all!!!

Unlucky dude but you were warned.

If its tied to the main Bios I'd leave alone tbh.
If your unhappy with the speeds of the gfx you could always chance yer arm at a Return stating that the stock speeds for the card are xxx/xxxMhz whereas this one will only do xxx/xxxMhz. Unless of course it was clearly advertised at the speeds you are seeing.

Yea i wouldnt have normally done so but after forking out £800+ on a laptop i thought the card would have been at least at stock 625mhz. But research showed that this wasnt the case and hp bios locked it to 500mhz due to heat problems.

Oh well, i think i was the 1st to try on this lapytop so hopefully people will see this thread in the future and then not flash there gpu!
