Can I get a decent 3 series for £10K?

Could you give some more details on the car - age, when you got it, history etc? Trying to gauge if you've been unlucky or if the car is a wrongun somehow.

A warranty might be an option, but that won't help restore faith in the car and the hassle if it does go wrong.

It sounds like you have more on your plate to worry about than a car so maybe running a premium car right now isn't the way to go. Do you need a diesel?

It's a 2007 A4 SLine Avant TDI170. It's had the DPF, EGR and EGR cooler removed its done about 95k. It came off lease I think so was on VAG longlife servicing which is an alternative way of saying we'll do the bare minimum during lease and dump the big bills on private buyers, hooray!

It also uses coolant albeit very slowly. I'm pretty much convinced the head has a small crack or has gone slightly porous. The cooling system has been looked over thoroughly and only a head pressure test will confirm it.

After this I might put it back to standard and get shot. If we go motobility she needs automatic and needs something she doesn't have to bend to get into. Plus space for two kids.

Sounds like motability is the way forward - it's no hassle motoring for when you have more important priorities in life which sounds like now!

A 3 series diesel is just as likely to have the same annoying and expensive faults. You might be lucky, you might not but it doesn't sound like the right answer here

Put the car in gear, pulled the handbrake and started her up. Loud thump and (I think) the pressure plate has released. Seems ok now.

Still looking into motobility though. Thanks guys.
