Can I get scammed from a FB buyer?

I put my phone up for sale on FB (£650), hoping for someone to collect and pay.

Someone is wanting to pay upfront and pay for RMSD. Their FB page consists of 3 family photos and zero other info, but that could be due to privacy settings?

If I get them to pay by BT can I get scammed some way I dont know about?

Obviously they need my full name and bank details to pay me.

Scam imo. You’ll get an email giving you a link where you have to go to to release the money into your account. I don’t know what happens next, but you certainly don’t get the money.

FB cash on collection only for items over £100

She wants my bank details for BT. So that should be safe right?

Theres no way they can make claim through RMSD is there?

It might be totally fine, just I'm not sure if there are new ways to scam I'm not aware of.

No, I had the same thing, but I avoided it. Theres only a small chance it’s legit.
 
Well I've turned them down and listed it as collection only. They also gave a name and postal address that didnt match the name of the person I was chatting to! :rolleyes:

Quite a few people making enquiries, and yet none of them look like your average FB profiles. Only a few pictures, and very little info on their pages.

Its more effort than its worth!!

Just take their money and post them a random phone shaped object. Noob.
 
Sounds highly suspicious straight away. Usually the limited profile is a giveaway although sometimes the profiles are hacked and look relatively well fleshed out.

Their location (if they're stupid enough not to hide it) usually gives them away as not being a legitimate buyer. And they also seem to like the automated messages; e.g. "Is this still available?".
 
I've sold a lot on marketplace via BT and posted the item. With BT as long as the sender's name matched the actual person I'm dealing with then I'd be generally fine, I'd also have the buyer pay fully insured RMSD. Obviously this is all after having a proper conversation with the buyer as it's easy to suss who is just out to scam and who is genuine. Size them up first and see if they're genuine, it is rather obvious when they aren't and I've had a fair few scammers try it on to which I just reply with goatse then block.

Just sold a phone on gumtree and the guy seemed genuine on SMS, then via email, he runs a business up in Scotland and the bank transfer name and address and quick search online all match up. Guy was wary at first of paying by BT but after he looked me up was all fine, little does he know that he's gonna get a brick lol*

Do not do bank transfer unless it's in person and name matched.

I was remote paid by a stolen bank account and I've never had so much stress, anxiety and hassle as what followed after that.

Long story short the bank locked my account due to potential money laundering.

And by locked down I mean
-no money in (ie salary)
-no money out (ie rent, direct debits)
-couldn't even sign in to online banking.

I called up the bank because my card wouldn't work and I couldn't login.. "sorry you need to come into branch. That's all we can say"

Yeah this. When I sold my FPV drone gear last year I had lots of chancers trying to scam, but just asking basic questions about the hobby was enough to weed them out. Specially when it came to selling the more expensive parts.

So basically if you want to really **** someone just send them money with a stolen account. :D

No iffs buts or maybes. Just suspended like that? Seems ridiculous.

Wonder how a digital only bank would deal with that.

Back on topic - cash is king for second hand market. Wouldn’t surprise me even if you got paid via PayPal if they started a claim.

Collection only, and I think I'll get it listed here on MM once I've sorted out a checkmend report.
 
I tried selling a pair of GTX 970 cards on FBM I used in SLI. Got one guy coming who broke down on the motorway Monday, was 100 percent collecting on Tuesday and then never turned up and never bothered to say anything.

Others asking questions and then go radio silent, even though they'd know everything they're asking if they just read the bloody listing properly!

I don't understand how there're so many idiots out there, I'm glad where I work it's mostly with educated people! I'd be giving up on life if I had to deal with these types of people all day!

I've done a handful of FB sales with zero issues. Most are collection items from around the house we no longer wanted. Although I did sell a camera for a decent amount, and the buyer paid BT up front, but she had a full FB profile, and was genuinely concerned about paying first and relying on me holding up my end of the bargain, but that all went well.

I think mobile phone sales is where there are too many scammers trying their luck.
