Can i hack this heatsink and get away with it?

So close!

I thought i had measured everything correctly, but apparently not!

So what do people think, could i take off the HS and carefully saw off the end without having a majr impact on the performance of the HS?

Or on the off chance does anyone know if a VF900 would work? The dimension are 1cm larger but what you cannot tell is the position of the fan on the HS,and the picture looks like it sits slightly lower on the GPU?

Cutting off the end of the heatpipe will lead to the cooling liquid evaporating off. This might not actually be that big a deal, the heatpipes on motherboards don't have a wick in them, and the difference between the right way up and the wrong way up isn't that much. Of course the heat load of a GPU is significantly more so you might not get away with it.
 
You won't impact performance as the heatpipes are at the end. So long as there is enough heatpipe left over then you should be fine.

EDIT: Sorry I'm talking rubbish. Ignore me and I'll go away .....eventually :)

What card is this ?

I reckon it will work with the ends chopped off. The copper pipes are still there and the fins also.

Its not going to overclock as well if at all, I doubt you care about that, worse case scenario would it working so badly that you have to underclock or add in extra fans.

I reckon 5 or 10c extra after you intentionally damage it. Test the theory for us :D


Alternatively design a perspex sidepanel with extra space over that card

So running it with out the cooling fluid in the pipes is like running a car with out the cooling fluid in the radiator. Should be just fine :D
 
Wouldn't the fluid from the heatpies potentially recondense inside the case somwhere?

Sounds like bad magic if you ask me.


How come some mobo's ride higher than others? My Asus board left me 5-8 mm clearance at the top of my TT, the gigagbyte brings it virtually into contact with the rail that the case side slides on. The weird bit is that the Asus looks the thicker of the two.
I wonder would it fit on a different board.


Another vote for a perspex side, but not holes, a slot, so you can still slide the case side on and off, and make them wider than the pipes too for safety when handling. It wont mess your airflow up that much, and in fact it could help cool the card........ if your case blows out more than it sucks in, any holes will suck nice cool ambient air in.......antec900 users with the rotorblade thing whacked up full will notice smeg all over the side inlet (if no fan present), due to this.

Its a 9600GT, which will not be oc'd

Unlikely anyone would know this unless someone had already tried it, but i wondered how high up the pipe the fluid would run, obviously it is capped off, just a question of how much copper i have before i hit the fluid.

You can buy these seperately, so i may buy one anyway and give it a go

Like the Perspex idea, hadnt thought about that, it wouldnt be something i could do myself, does anyone offer this sevice of cut to size?

How about getting some pliers on the ends of the heatpipes and crimping them then bending them over?
 
You Have 2 Fixes

Modify the cooler mounting to lower the Cooler on the Card
Or, Crush the protruding ends of the heatpipe and cut off and solder or just bend over

Only risk with modding the pipes is "copper" as used in modern day heatsinks vary's from copper coloured Alluminum/steel to low grade pipe which is likely to split, unlike real copper You could tie in a knot !
 
+1 for changing cooler, modding the heatsink isnt worth the risk, modding the case would look stupid so try a cooler which doesnt have any protrusions.
 
wow fluid in heat pipes, leanr something new every day, i thought they were solid. Common sense doesnt really apply to this, well doesnt to me.
But yeah a new hsf, would ultimatly be better as you can have the nice warm feeling of giving it away or just flog it.
