Can I have it all - probably not. 430d / 640d?

That I’m not sure about. A 1.0 civic will likely be pulling 4K rpm at 80mph. An 8 speed 430d will likely be 3k Max. And getting better mpg too.

I reckon I will be getting high 40s /50 mpg

will a 430d do that at 80 mph?

edit Civics nothing like 4000rpm at 80mph, Top speeds around 128mph, it will hit that in 5th not 6th. Redline is only 5500rpm.

"Just one foible stops it from being a decent cruiser: fuel economy. An average return of 36mpg over 400 miles of motorway is not enough to justify downsizing to this car’s 1.0-litre triple."

I get better mpg from my 1.6 turbo than that on the motorway.

ive seen 62 mpg out of ours commuting on the M62 Manchester to Liverpool.

I've only ever seen one accurate review of the Civic 1.0 on YouTube.

All petrol engined cars I have owned are bad around town in stop start traffic.
The Civic returns low 30s (I do have stop/start switched off however).
My Berlingo 1.6HDi returns around 44mpg around town which is the best i've had.
On a run I would say the Civic beats the Citroen and this is more noticeable the faster you drive.
(Berlingo does have the aerodynamics of a brick however).

I also have a BMW Z4 2.5i Sport.

That's because its a lie.

Well maybe not a lie, I could also get it to show 35 MPG on the motorway if I mixed in plenty of town driving and did full throttle overtakes at every opportunity.

The thing is with most cars, including diesels the economy totally goes out of the window at speed.
You you actually have to drive 60-70 mph to get an acceptable figure.
So it sort of defeats the object of having a performance one.
Our petrol civic 1.0 will probably match or beat most diesel cars at 80mph.

My 640d was more efficient at a certain speed above 69mph than it was from 60-70mph.

Thanks all for the input. @[TW]Fox the car you have suggested is literally the only one I won't be going for just because I don't really want the exact same car as my dad as much as he does love it - am I being silly?

I have been out doing some research out in the field yesterday and today and have test drove the following; 430d 435d and 640d. My thoughts were that the styling of the 640d and just being a bigger car although the back seats are rather tight. The 435d was very nice but maybe it was the dry roads, maybe I didn't use the fun peddle enough but I couldn't see that much of a difference to the 430d. I do like the idea of a 2 door . The 640d I drove ended up getting an engine management light on thru the test drive so that didn't bode well. I think I will look for another example. At the moment I'm thinking 640d.

Smaller update on the Octavia it went into Skoda yesterday for its service and had to have a new cambelt - thankfully under warranty.

Yes, you are. Buy a 4 Series because you want one and prefer it - not because your Dad has the 5 Series. My Dad has had 5 Series the entire time I've had them - I'm on my third, he's had 4 but has since moved onto a 6 Series. I think they are great cars and don't really understand why people would avoid a car simply because someone they know has one. If you like one, get one, if you don't, don't.

The 640d is simply the better car by absolutely miles. If they are in budget they are massively better than the 4 Series. The interior is exceptionally good, its better specified, its just better. And mechanically its the same as the 4 Series so its no less reliable.

The 6 Series is basically a luxury 5 Series coupe. I'd have had one if they were not so much more money than the equivalent 5 when I got mine (I got a year old 530d for the price of a 3 year old 640d).

The only reason not to buy a 6 Series is if your budget isn't enough for a nice one. They will typically be fairly old, high mileage and tatty if you're looking around the 15k mark.

I'm going to see what today at the £16k which has 40k on the clock so I'm hoping for a good one. It has a brown leather interior which on the photos looks really nice so fingers crossed on the condition of the car overall. Your absolutely right on the 5 series thing I am being a little silly so I think I will put them back on the list. I am now focused towards the coupe style.

Just been on the motorway in the Civic, I calculated ;) That 6th gear would give 2900 rpm.
It really is an impressive engine, best of the 1.0 turbos IMO.
Don't let the poor 0-60 times fool you, 1st and 2nd gear are very low to get the turbo spinning when its fully laden hills etc. It requires 3 changes to get to 60.
Roll on performance is impressive.

My Dad's 640 is a lovely car I must admit, there is absolutely no competition between it and any 3/4 series of you're spending similar money. He did look at 5 or 6 before buying his though, and I'm sure needed to spend about £3k more than he originally thought to get one worth having.

It's also been in for warranty work a couple of times already, goes without saying I guess but make sure you can get BMW coverage

If I ever start moving again and my 210k mile 123d finally dies (it's so bloody minded I love it and want to keep it forever) the top of my list is a 335d touring with some sort of bluefin thing.

The chances of me needing a new car anytime soon are vanishing though, I've put diesel in mine once since March

These big stinking diesels are the problem you realise that?
They only came about due to government incompetence and tax breaks for company car users as diesel was supposed to be green.
Who the hell needs a 4.0 litre Diesel engine to power a passenger car.
It’s nuts and it’s about to go the way of the dinosaur.
