Can i have some advice on 4gb of DDR2 Ram for the following combination :

CPU : Intel Q6600

Mobo : Asus P5Q Pro

I would like 4gb of ram, it doesnt matter if its in 2 sticks or 4 stick

I would like to be able to overclock the CPU with it.

So which is the best Ram for doing this? If possible try and keep the price relative to the performance [eg. not too over the top]

Also what brands work best with this combination?

Thanks a lot to anyone who can help me.

Any of the 2x2gb CAS4 PC2-6400 kits should be fine.

Usually I would recemmend this, tho it's out of stock here atm. The PC2-8500 version here is a great price atm (well until tomorrow lunchtime anyway).

okay, what is the beneficial of paying the extra 10-20 quid for a set of 8500 over a set of 6400 ? what overclocking potential etc?

Not a lot of benefit with a Q6600 since PC2-6400 is almost always able to keep up.

but if i was to get a 9300 or 9450 Yorkfield then it would need to be PC8500 right?

is this to do with the 1600/1333/1066 FSB figures in terms of the cpu capability and the mobo potential?

will the next generation of intel processors do 1600? since the ones available at the moment seem capable of either 1333 or 1066

Decent CAS 4 PC2-6400 should stick with a Q9300 or Q9450 to ~3.5ghz and ~3.7ghz respectively, probably more if you loosen the timings to CAS 5. But ofcourse PC2-8500 is guaranteed to go further.

The 1600/1333/1066 FSB figures are pretty much the minimum the board will do with a particular CPU. You divide the CPU's stock FSB speed by two to get the minimum memory speed required ie- 1066 / 2 = 533/PC2-5300.

There will be one 1600mhz FSB Intel chip in the current generation, and it will be the most expensive. The next generation won't use a FSB and will use something similar to the AMD HyperTransport system (they'll run on a 133mhz BUS, just like AMD chips run on a 200mhz BUS, tho the two speeds can't really be compared).
