Can i have some advice setting up a proxy server

Afternoon everyone i was wondering if someone could help me, i am really keen to learn how to set up a proxy server and was wondering what would be the best place to start, is there a certain application i need to set this up?

Personally I started to look in to squid as its a fairly common proxy and is a good starting point me thinks: http://www.squid-cache.org/

Alternatively I can recommend Tinyproxy, does exactly what it says on the tin. Quick and lightweight, simple to configure - although lacks some features that Squid provides.

Worth a look though.
