So we've gotten you from 38+ processes to 30? Result I'd say.

As for settings? Just run Spybot scan and delete anything it finds. If its something you want to keep, you can right-click and tell Spybot to ignore it in future scans.

Microsoft Security? As in the XP firewall? If yes, I've never actually used the XP firewall.

Well when they are running, you'll see them in the Task Manager. But since the protection they provide is done passively, you can set them to protect against threats and shut them down. So they are NOT running in the background because they've made the changes to Windows.

Imagine if it was Word OK. You'd write a document with the settings you want. You then save the 'settings' to protect you from spyware. Now would you keep Word running? No, you've made the changes to the settings so you can exit the program.

No they don't run in the background at all. Its like having a flu jab. The nurse doesn't leave the needle/syringe in "just in case".

The PC has been "innoculated" against nasties in the way a jab protects you against an illness/disease. Your firewall, Comodo I think you said, does the popping up if anything tries to get in.

Every so often Spybot and SpywareBlaster will get new updates for you to download. This is because new threats are being identified, and so the developers push the updates to you so that you are continually up-to-date with proper protection.

i get you mate now finally i updated the imunize part of spybot so that blocks all the crap im guessing i leave u alone to enjoy your evening

thanks so much

No probs Liam. How how many processes on start up now?

Did you look at the Black Viper and Elder Geek services stuff? Cross reference them with the services that are running; you may find some services are running, when you don't actually need them at all. I do have a PDF version of a Black Viper services list if you'd like it. I think its easier to comprehend the PDF than the new Black Viper site.

Obviously there are some services that you mustn't touch unless you like breaking XP. But you can trim some processes off the list and save some RAM by weeding out the odd service that you don't need. There could even be some services that you do need from time to time; just set them to manual. XP can then initiate them as and when it needs them. So until you do need them, they aren't running so you save RAM. And then when you/XP do need them, XP can start them up. Only services you'll never need should be set to disabled.

One services tip I can give you: Make sure 'Automatic Updates' is set to automatic. The Windows Update site moans like a madam if Automatic Updates is set to manual or disabled. BUT I've found that 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service' or BITS for short CAN be set to manual. It seems that XP NEEDS Automatic Updates on automatic but XP can manually start up BITS itself. That should save you a bit of RAM and a process to boot.

If you aren't sure whether or not to disable a service or set it to manual, post back here and I shall consult my services PDF archives and make a recommendation. ;)

Understand though, that you might need more services than me if you do something with your PC that I don't.

Well off hand, Indexing service, Error Reporting, Fast User Switching (unless you share PC with other users) can be disabled. Help and Support put to manual. I hardly use it. Actually I've removed it from my XP install with nLite.

Unless you are on a laptop, disable the Smart card service. You could maybe disable Secondary Logon. Unless you use the XP firewall or your PC is used to share the Internet to others, disable the XP firewall/ICS service. Perhaps park the Printer Spooler service into manual. I don't print much and by having the service in manual, XP just runs that for me when I do print.

I've never used the System Restore service. Some OcUKers will say that they see it as a threat. If you get infected with a virus, it might bed down nice and snug in the System Restore files so when you restore the files to put your PC back to how it was before the virus, lo and behold the virus is back again.

Do you have a broadband connection? If you do and you don't "dial-up" to anything such as a modem or a phone then you should be safe disabling the Telephony service. Computer Browser sounds important, my research tells me its for a network system. So unless you have a network disable this.

Windows Defender service can be disabled if you've gotten rid of that.

Do you have an MP3 player? If not might as well disable the Portable Media Serial Number service.

I personally disable the Security Center. I am quite capable of keeping my AV and FW up-to-date, they do it automatically for me.

You might like the help that it gives you though so your choice on that.

And lastly, any wireless cards in your PC? If not say hasta la vista to the Wireless Zero Configuration service.

These are just suggestions I'm making, comparing what you have running to what I've set them to. You might need some of the above for various reasons but I hope I've mentioned a decent number that you can rid of.

mentioned a decent number? you said loads lol i cant thank you enough i take it by setting things to manuel xp will enable them for me when i decide to use them? sorry if i have bored you today mate but i feel i have learnt a lot from you and this thread will go along way for me to look back on.

You could try out Acronis TrueImage. That will make a copy of your software and save it to DVD or an external HDD. If something goes wrong, just run TrueImage and restore your backup image. Takes a few minutes to restore your OS and software.
