hey guys,

im giving my back garden a overhaul (new turf etc) and am wanting to get a structure in my back garden for a 125cc mito (temp bike) then a 600cc superbike :D

im also going to have a work bench and a large tool box as well as the gardening equipment.

ATM im thinking a 8ftx10ft metal shed/garage that i will be sitting on top of some concrete council slabs i have gathered locally.
the idea is to dig a small 8ftx10ft hole, fill it with sharp sand and dry cement, then level it off and leave it to set for a couple of days (moisture from the ground will set it off) after that, put a pile of dry cement on top of the slabs and brush it into the gaps between the slabs to fill it in and make it a bit more stronger.
the metal shed will then be bolted to the base that i made.

so what do you guys think?
the metal shed/garage is £300 a wooden shed in double the price.

thats the first thing, the second is bike security and shaving insurance prices.
so whats the best thing to do? bolt a ground anchor and have a huge chain?
also what can i do to shave some cash off the insurance prices?

thanks guys, looking forward to your input :)

With the councils permission obviously? :D

Metal sheds are not a great idea for storing bikes it as they tend to suffer very badly from condensation. If you must use a metal shed ensure it's very well ventilated and consider insulating the roof.

You will need plenty of tools and decent working facilities to keep a Mito on the road for any length of time ;)

buy some galvanised corrugated sheets and build a wooden frame then clad it in those

just lay a square of slabs and cement in the gaps, far quicker,or sit it on a single coarse of breeze blocks

I did this last year, Stuck a base down some slabs & stuck a shed on top, Shed is alarmed the bike is alarmed the disc lock is alarmed & I have 2 Oxford cable locks one for each wheel. On top of that you have to get the back out the shed & down the jitty down the side of my house so I'll be waiting at the other end with a Hammer to go all Peter Sutcliffe on there thieving ***** :p

What you wrote in the OP for the base is sound enough but Dogbreath is right about metal ones they sweat real bad.

ive found somebody locally that builds sheds, so im going to see what he quotes me for a 8ftx10ft.

so if i go with the wooden shed, any advice on locking it up? also whats the best way to fit ground anchors?

Depends, there are those that you dig a hole and concrete it in, or then there or those that you bolt into the concrete. Or you could just get a large Plant pot, fill it with concrete and left over lead or some depleted uranium if you know you know some dodgy types and concrete all that in the pot with a hoop/ ground anchor.

I wonder if it would be cheaper to get a bricky to knock u up a breezeblock shed? then just stick a tin roof on it

abit of a update guys, i got in touch with a local shed builder, he want £1000 for a 8x10ft shed! i though **** that, did a google search and came across this shed at wickes
http://beta.wickes.co.uk/10x8-Overlap-Security-Workshop/p/110570

now this is even better... the exactly same shed for £100 cheaper!
http://www.buyshedsdirect.co.uk/gar...ds-pressure-treated-overlap-security-workshop

so what do you think? will it be good enough quality? i will be insulating it and i can add some angled wood beams to the shed internally then put chip board over to tidy it up and make it look better.

whats your thoughts and anything else i should think about doing? thanks

Looks great, brilliant size as well. Quality looks sound as well but you can do what I did with mine & just beef it up with plenty of big screws & some cut bits of wood in the right places. I didn't add any wood to mine just banged untold long screws in everywhere but as yours is bigger than mine a couple of strategic pieces of wood screwed down real tight will make it bomb proof. Well not real bomb proof but Rubber Dingy Rapids bomb proof for sure.

asked around local shed/fencing firms for any ex display sheds? that's how I got mine think it was £210 8ft x 10ft

heh cheap fliomsy wodden shed but then line the inside with a welded cage of rebar :p

watch thier faces go  after they break the woden pannel off :p

haha well the slabs will be cemented to the floor as well as to each other, so going to cut a hole in the floor of the shed a fit a ground anchor to the slabs :D

btw, is the one ground anchor enough for two bikes?
also can someone recommend me some beasty chains and locks.

if its in my shed its not coming out unless i do it myself! :D

wazza, is 8x10ft big enough? or do you find it should be a little bigger? its now going to be my bike, man shed :D

managed to get the mrs to allow me to keep the crappy shed for the lil ones garden toys and gardening tools in.

yep :D

i will be ordering the shed at the end of month (work bonus pays for it!)

then i shall start filling it with tools, workbench, and most importantly, BIKES! :D

I bought a 8x6 metal shed last year and have not suffered from the dreaded condensation that everyone mentions as soon as someone suggests a metal shed! It's perfect and was easy to put up.

I got mine from gardenbuildingsdirect.com, made by billyoh and great quality.

Don't get too hung up on a base. I bought a wooden base to attach the shed too and it's just sat on gravel and hasn't moved an inch. My soil it very clay like.

the thing is, with a wooden shed, i can easily add and change it, by adding extra supports to the roof or sides, as well as putting up sheets of chip board over the insulation.

with a metal shed, im very limited in this area.

wazza, when you have two bikes in there, did you have plenty enough room for a workbench and a tool chest? i plan on having a project bike in there as well if i can,

I bought a metal shed and sealed it against some concrete, does the job reasonably well - problem I have is that with the severe rain it broke some of the sealant so I have a river running through the back at the moment and can't fix it until it dries up (damn you weather!).

Here's a picture of my R6 in a 10x10 (I think) to give you an idea of scale, could easily get another bike in there but I think you'd struggle to have a decent amount of working space with 2 bikes in there

hmmmm... yeh its going to be tight, the only thing i can do is put a bike outside while im working in there.

i dont know if im being paranoid but, can you add extra security to the doors?
and are they noisy when being used?
