Bit of a noobie question but I've never used more than 4gb ram before.

I have two pc's one has 2x2gb G Skill Ripjaw and the other has some Corsair XMS 3 (again 2x2gb). I just wondered if I could just add 2gb of the XMS 3 into the pc with the Ripjaw in it?

Or does this have to be done in pairs? The other 2gb is going in a mame machine.

We'll need the product code/part number or a link to the XMS3 and ripjaws - as they do quite a few flavours in both ranges (especially the ripjaws) with varying voltages, timings and frequency.

E.g. the XMS3 could be 1333 MHz and the Ripjaws 1600 - but the voltages are the most crucial.

You can get the 'part number' for the memory using CPUz under the SPD tab.

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz

G-Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 1600mhz

Not quite enough info as there are ~3 flavours of G-Skill within that range -link - but it's enough info to advise you that it's possible to run the 2 sets together (if the XMS3 will run below 1.65V - which it should).

Run CPUz and get the part number of the G-Skill so that we can identify its timings and voltage - then i will be able to tell you which timings/voltages you will need to enter to marry up the two sets, so that they can operate together.

You can get the 'part number' for the memory using CPUz under the SPD tab.

See above post firts

EDIT: You will probably end up with settings very similar to this:

  • 1600Mhz (frequency)
  • 9-9-9-27 (timings to match XMS3)
  • ~1.5V (max voltage - will 1.55V to match G-Skill)
  • 2T (Command rate )
