Mmmmkay.

Q6600, Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L, 2gig PC8500 generic OCUK

Well, i finally got my rig just sitting at 3 Ghz because any more it was bombing which surprised me......but im not gonna barf cos its still a 600Mhz jump. I dont think the processor is at fault though.

Now, to get 3 gig i went for 375 x 8 as i head the Q6600 was bandwidth hungry (correct if wrong) so that was simple enough.

Now, my memory is the OCUK generic stuff but should still be ok.

- PC8500 1066MHz CAS 5-5-5-15
- 240pin, Non-ECC, Un-buffered DDR2 SDRAM DIMM
- 6 Layers Ultra Low Noises Shielded PCB
- 1yr Warranty
- 2.0V-2.3V Power Supply

Now.....as far as i know, my memory is running at 900 (using a 2.4 mem multiplier) because on the auto setting the board **** itself.

I cant go any higher than this and i dont understand it, surely the memory is rated at 1066 and i should be able to get there?

I also have the timings set at 5-5-5-15 manually cos the board never got it right so surely it should be able to run 1066 @ 5-5-5-15 looking at the above spec, no?

I cant even move the multiplier to 2.5 (937.5) as it bombs out.

According to Everest, the memory has 2.1v ok too.

Any advice guys?

is there a problem with my memory if it wont run at the rated speed?

Regards
Jinj

That could be your problem with going higher with your CPU. Try evening your multipler down to about 2.0 or something, then increase your 375x8 and try 400x8

That does not answer your mem issue though. Does your mb accept higher that 800mhz mem? Edit: yes it does :)

Hey guys,

Thanks for the input.

Bloodline, yeah AFAIK it is supposed to support 1066 and 1333 at a push i thought

Pneumonic, i will try the NB first and then have a wee hunt for the mem settings. Everything else memory wise is set to auto see and the mobo was getting the 5-5-5-15 very wrong.

And its just the 2 x 1Gig sticks mate.

I did fancy 4 but had heard that sometimes its troublesome with this board.

ok well 2 sticks shouldnt need a NB volts increase.. try setting the RAM voltage to 2.2v and see if that is any better (would double check the memory is rated at 2.0 - 2.3v) may be that to run @ "full speed" needs more v's

EDIT:
Just check the voltage the memory is rated at first.. RAM is very sensitive to voltage and you will kill it a lot quicker over volting it than you would your CPU for example

Erm, well......a couple of reviews of the exact product i bought

a lot cheaper than the rivals. Got my e6320 @ 3.2 ghz and this at 1066mhz.

Fantastic value

Currently running 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 at 2.1v in my P35-DS3P.

50 quid less then the Dominator too.

Something is definately not right here.

Have you tried 2.0v? Since I wrote that review I've bought a few more pairs, and they have been very hit-and-miss. Some sticks won't do 1066mhz (won't even do 800mhz 4-4-4-12), some will do it at 2.0v and don't like the voltage to be any higher, and some are the same as my original sticks and require 2.1v.

The problem is that you can get a pair that contains a 2.0v stick and a 2.1v stick, and they won't run together. If your pair won't run at 1066mhz 5-5-5-18 then send them back.

Hey cob,

Thanks for the input, it never occurred to me that you would be on here :D

I will do a bit more research into this tonight as at this rate i could have bought good branded 6400 stuff instead of generic 8500ram.

I will try both dropping and raising the memory a touch tonight and see how it goes.

I might actually try one stick at a time too out of curiosity.

Cheers mate

Definitely test them individually.

I have four sticks of it sitting in front of me, and whilst each one will run at 1066mhz 5-5-5-18 with no issues (two need 2.0v and two need 2.1v), none of them will run together.

But my original pair are still running fine in my machine alongside another working pair.

Ok gang....

There is absolutely no way this will run at 1066 at all.

I tried backing the CPU mult down so i knew it wasnt that set the meme to 1066.

nope

I tried single sticks

no difference

no luck.

now it ssitting at 900 @ 5-5-5-15 and will go no higher at all

RMA time?

So right.....

OCUK agreed to swap out the old ram.......put a few bob to it and got the OCZ SLI 8500..........

much much better

straight to the top

:D

Thanks gang
