My 80gig hdd is coming upto 5 years old now and it's been fantastic. I don't want to find out 1 day it suddenly won't boot up, so i want to know if i can make a perfect copy of my current operating system, settings, software everything onto a new one without the need to reinstall windows.

Probably the easiest way i can think of is to install it into another pc along with the new one, and copy all the windows files over. Only problem is, will it boot up when i put the new one back inside my pc?

You can simply clone. Plenty of (free) tools to assist you do this even from HD manufacturer.

Only issue is if your moving to another system, i.e. new mobo you might have to reinstall Windows :(
