Can I rent a powerful Windows machine to use remotely?

You can get a windows aws from amazon, they just cost more.

AWS offers both and generally tries to undercut Azure... check prices on both but IIRC Amazon forced Microsoft to slash theirs.

Never knew you could get Windows computers from AWS.

Still probably better for the OP to blog borrowing a mates or one at Uni though.

What is his cost expectation per month?

That looks like it will cost £20 per month to use their shared cluster and a lot more if you want your own one of course.

If he can spend £70 per month I would get entry level enterprise server from ovh. If its about £30 a month then i would get something from kimsufi but you would not have significant gains over home pc he would just be able to free up his home pc.

You would have to pay for windows license as well if you run windows, so have to add that cost as well. Which probably won't have to pay that cost with azure.

Paying for a windows license and having to rent a dedicated server on a monthly basis is utterly pointless.

If you want to use a computer for a few hours then use it again for a few hours some other time (as you would with a uni project) then use a pay by the hour service such as Azure or AWS.

Microsoft Azure, offers a month trial with upto £130 to spend.

So you can test it first.

Azure looks like the ticket. I can probably get it within that £130 free spend too. Will give it a try this afternoon.

Surely the UNI has something you can use for free?

I will talk to them on monday but it's easter holidays now, but IT services will still be in. Getting approval to run my own software is the issue!

I have a dedicated server I deployed in a datacentre recently with the plan of dev work. Can happily use it for a bit assuming I am not out of pocket from your usage?

Azure is the way forward. Probably even cover yourself under their free trial, although I think that the trial is limited computationally (ie, spec wise)

If you only need it for a few hours sure, but if you need it for anything more than you would be better off price wise going for a dedicated server.

The cost of azure is a lot compared to dedicated server.

8 core 14gb ram £500 per month

What you can get for £500 per month in dedicated server is not even comparable. Unless i missed something, i think people just like the idea of using the cloud, its like a gimmick with flashy interfaces etc. Plus its made for IT illegitimate people.
