Wonder if some of you fine people can help me. I brought a fan controller for my cm 690. After i installed it i booted the pc and it was ok then it shut off. I then smelt burning in my pc. I disconnected everything and then took the fan controller out.

I then put it all back minus the fan controller. The pc would not boot. I took it all out of the case and then tried it on my desk and it all worked. I then put it all back and it did not.

Now to cut a very long story short i found out that if i had my three drives in then it would not boot. I took one drive at a time and found out it was my 320gb Maxtor diamond hard drive that was the problem.

Now i assume that it is broke as i have tried it in other computers. When i brought it i did not register it but have now. I brought it locally about 6 months ago but i have no receipt.

I was going to wait 30 days and rma. Will they claim i have done something or will i be ok?

Sorry for waffling on :D

Are you certain it's faulty? Scan it with Seatools (as Seagate now own Maxtor) from DOS do both the short and long scans.

Often hard drive returns don't need receipts, they go on serial numbers and production dates, but as I've never owned a Maxtor drive *shudder*, then I can't say for sure.

But like I say, scan it, write down any error codes and submit a RMA to maxtor, just don't mention what happened. As long as you don't, they shouldn't be able to tell what happened.

The problem i have is my pc will not boot with it installed. Either on it's own or with the other two. It just refuses to even boot. The psu starts the light go on then nothing at all. No fans turn.

Surley the pc should still boot even if it was faulty or corrupt?

How long have you waited? Normally after trying for a couple of minutes to detect/initialise the HDD the BIOS should continue.

For the HDD get online and check it's warranty status.

I booted the pc. The fans spun then nothing. Left it for a minute or so. Still nothing. I regiesterd last weekend but i have had it for about 6 months. The warrenty says jan 2010 so still in time. Pc works without it in just when i's in i get nothing at all.

I agree rma it.

I had a Seagate 500gb drive that well lets just say decided to stop working, would still let me boot, and would show up in bios, but would stop installing vista at a set point, i rma'd it to seagate, within that week got it back repaired.

Yours deffinatly sounds like its dead.
