The question is as the title says.

I have 2 PCs with Windows 10 and would like to install Umbuntu to use as dual boot on each.
I can use the existing Windows 10 operating systems with the networking disabled and use Umbuntu to do the internet stuff.

Can I run Umbuntu from an external drive to do this. I would use 2 external drives one for each PC.

I think I should have asked this question in the Linux Forum.

You can and I did but usb can be flaky. I had multiple rebuilds due to file corruption with an os on an external drive so I would not recommend it for any length of time beyond testing

I know it's the opposite of what you want to do, but I ran Linux on my internal drive and a Windows to Go installation on a properly fast flash drive. I just had to tell my BIOS to boot from the flash drive when I wanted to run Windows.
Worked very well. I only had it to run games that wouldn't run on Linux; loading times were obviously pretty bad but not terrible. Stability was 100%.
I only stopped because I got tired of playing with Linux and flaked back to Windows. I'll do it again soon I'm sure.
