Can I run triple channel mem sets in 1156?

Hi all,

Random question.

Can I run ram from triple channel mem sets in 1156 socket systems? I work in a shop where we sell them singley, so I assume they are compatible...

You can use triple channel sets, but you will be limited to dual or single channel.
Socket 1156 only supports dual channel.

Yes you can. You probably know already but makes sure the speed is supported by the motherboard.

Yes you can but their more expensive so unless you're getting them at discount price it's not worth it. Just buy dual channel.

you mean each stick is single? they sell them as triple channel by the stick?

triple channel kits are suposed to be matched sticks not random sticks out of a batch although as far as i know three random sticks of the same make would more than likely work in triple channel.

the manufactures garuntee they are matched sticks when they sell them as a triple channel kit.

you would only get single channel if you put 3 sticks in a 1156 motherboard anyway

He means can you take RAM from a triple channel kit and use them on a 1156 board I think.

They are the same ram modules aren't they? The only difference is the manufacture is saying they have tested them and they will work in tri channel and if they don't you can get them replaced.

If you use all of the chips then you'll be running single channel, if you use only 2 in the right slots they should run dual channel.

Does this mean that effectively i3 or i5 setups are limited to max of 4GB of dual channel 2x2GB or could you buy 2 dual channel sets like 2x2GB and a 2x1GB to get 6GB?

yes you could run 6GB like that in dual channel mode
