Hi guys,

Do you know a way to tell Windows (Vista in this case) to renew my wireless IP settings after I turn the computer back on after a hibernation.

I can manually tell windows to repair (i think it does the same as run > cmd > ipconfig /renew)

but its just a pain doing this, and i'm lazy!

any ideas?

Hello aph, you lazy, lazy person. :p:D

I am not aware of any way to automatically renew your connection when you come out of "Hibernation" mode in Windows Vista. However, you can quite easily create a shortcut so that once clicked, Windows Vista will automatically renew your connection.

First, right click anywhere on your desktop and go to the "New" option and then "Shortcut". The "Create Shortcut" dialog box will pop up. In the "Type the location of the item:" box, type in "ipconfig /renew" (Without the quotes) and click "Next". Now name the shortcut an appropriate name and click "Finish". Then you can pin the shortcut to your "Quick Launch Bar" and delete it from your desktop if necessary.

When your system wakes up from "Hibernation" mode, simply click on the specific icon and you will then be connected back to the internet. :)

Top man!

I was hoping there was a way to tell windows to automate a macro that does this after hibternation. buttt

short of some inspirational information, this is a very helpful piece of advice.

i wasnt aware it was possible to create shortcuts and insert command prompt commands into them. nice one

cheers for the help.

can you set it to auto detect wireless networks? use windows to manage the connection, not 3rd party software

i'd consider looking for a driver update for your card also, my gf's laptop 'just works' when it comes out of sleep (not the same as hibernation, but still)

Yeah there's a tick in the box saying automatically search for available networks. unfortunately, if this does eventually kick in. it takes longer than ive managed to wait for, because after hybernation it thinks its connected to my router. but it isn't really.

Possibly buying a different wireless adapter would solve the problem, but I'm runnning the latest drivers for the card, and still no luck.

I've never used hibernation so bear with me.

Do you have to re-enter your log into details when you come out of it?

If so start > Task Scheduler > New event > ipconfig /rename > on event "On workstation unlock" from the drop down list > okay

should work a treat. As i said i don't use hibernation so i don't know if it asks for login details. But if it does this should be just the ticket :)

I'd never used hibernation much til recently, but it does come in handy. Especially if like me you turn your PC off at night. And like leaving all your apps open so you can pick up where you left off the next day...

Hibernation doesn't (for my PC with just me as a user) ask for login details. so i dont know if what you just wrote would be useful? i presume not? but thanks for the help anyway. you werent to know if you dont use it.

Okay. Try this then

enter hibernation > leave hibernation.

Go to event viewer and look for something that happens EVERYTIME you come out of hibernation. Once you've found something let me know (can be anything, a service restarting. Just a system information/warning, anything at all) :)

are you using a pc or a laptop?

if it's a pc, then just use sleep mode instead of hibernation, its tons faster

you ******!

only joking. but oh my days, i never thought trying out sleep mode would be such a headache.

so i choose sleep mode... pc turns off... all well and good

turning it back on? NADA (well it powered on, but no output)

so i thought okay...

takes CMOS battery out to reset BIOS...

nothing

so i try swapping out my graphics card, RAM, even tested my PSU

i was like ******, what's going on.

i rang a friend, who... in this case anyway, was more knowledgeable...

he said that Windows Vista can play up using sleep mode, depending on the ACPI settings in the BIOS. and he asked how I reset the BIOS. so he told me to take the battery out again, this time using a screwdriver to short the two pieces of metal by the battery. and VOILA! we had life

but ouch. that was a painful learning experience!

Watch your language!

Hello aph, first of all, please remove the swear word. Thank you. :)

There was a thread made a couple of days ago regarding a user experiencing a few problems with the "Sleep" function in Windows Vista. That particular thread can be found here. Hopefully it will help you out a little. :)
