Can I temporarily stop my CPU fan for a second or two to identify noise?

I personally don't really like stopping fans and motors while theres a current going through never know when that lack of CEMF might burn it out :(

^^ Typhoon split my finger nail and drew blood which I promptly bled on the motherboard

If its a cpu fan working on pwm or whatever its called, you could drop the speed drastically by fooling the motherboard into thinking the cpu temp was 20 or so

I think it was an old edition of Everest utils that used to do this as a bug/bonus with my asus board. Load it up and the fans would drop to 200rpm, cpu went to 80c and I left it overnight quiet as can be

I read a post saying how he thought his pc was broke because the fan wasnt started immediately.
Fans dont even matter, its the heatsink which will zap your cpu in 1 second if its not (firmly) connected.
I tried it once believe me, last cpu I owned that could survive no heatsink at all was a cyrix 586, the heatsink fell off and it was fine/froze till I put it back on

You can boot the pc and play with it for 5 mins at least without the heatsink getting overloaded I expect, no fan is needed especially if we are talking about case fans still being on

Not seen one for a while but some CPU dont even have fans, its all passive

I had to stop my cpu's cooling fan to determine were most of my noise was coming from. through stopping the cpu cooler's fan i found that it was my power supply that was making the noise. changed my power supply and i have a very quite computer again.

The bios beeps will start to signal but aslong as it isnt stopped for too long then it will be fine.

Dude,

You are on a post count mission - revival of two year old threads, and one line replies. Go find another forum to troll!

Man-up and use your finger it's a plastic fan not a circular saw!!!

I do this all the time with case, GPU and CPU fans never had a problem and it's the simplest and quickest way of identifying a noise :)

might not be a saw, but do you know how fast it is spinning ? :D

Begs the question, what is the fastest spinning fan used in a pc and anyone got something more lethal like a fan with metal blades maybe

Just unplug the wire from the mobo and plug it back in when you're done testing.

I could run my CPU comfortably in passive mode if it wasn't for the overclock. Nothing wrong with that, many people aim to eliminate any noise coming out their PCs.

Put a glove on if you don't want to cut your finger! I did that one time when I wanted to stop a case fan.

Ye you can stop them with out a problem. Just watch your finger lol

put your finger in the fan and then start your pc.

less risk of hurting your finger.

Reminds me of the nightmare I experienced when I was little:(. Seeing the fan floor stand spinning rapidly, the adrenaline just rushed in me and I stupidly placed my left hand in the way of spinning fan blades:eek::(.

Next thing you know my index and middle finger got cut badly and the pain was excruciating but luckly the bones were unaffected and the skin healed after few weeks.:)

Yeah I would definitely watchout for fingers when using them to stop fan.

Safety first;)
