Can I upgrade to a C2D from a P4?

Hello,
Recently I've been getting into the more 'Hardcore' gaming side of things, and finding most of my available time on online games, and as such I'm seeing the underperformance of my P4 3.4Ghz.

So, I think it may be wise to upgrade to a C2D.

I am unsure as to what my motherboard is, and what it allows etc. Basically my question is - If I buy a C2D, will it work with my motherboard currently?

I've been looking at ocUK's prices and they seem fairly cheap for the good reviews I've heard. Well, here's my CPUZ text report so you wizzkids can see if I'll be able to use a C2D with my current setup.

I will also be getting 2GB ram shortly, so disregard the 1GB ram and think 2GB :P. If a C2D won't work with my current hardware, can you please tell me which piece of hardware(s) I will need to upgrade, and I'll try to do some research.

Thanks for all help so far :)

Pretty sure C2D required a different motherboard spec so I'd say it was very unlikely your P4 board would support C2D.

Okay, so I need to get a new C2D compatible motherboard.

Would that require an additional PSU / Fan upgrade because of the higher speeds associated with C2D?

A better PSU should only be needed if you're upgrading your graphics card too.

Well my PSU is running fine with my 8400GS (I think).

As somebody mentioned earlier about a Pentium DualCore.

Are pentium dualcores good for the gaming aspect of PC's? And if I got a pentium dualcore, would I be able to use it with my current mobo?

Yip.

But they're not easy to get hold of, and they still go for big money on Ebay, especially the higher clocked ones.

Ah so I'm guessing OCUK don't sell them, how come?

Is their any recognised shop I could buy it from which delivers to the UK?

They're oldish tech now, so very few places now stock them.

But if you're looking to upgrade just for games it might be worth upgrading your graphics card instead. Something like the ATI X1950 Pro can be had for £70 these days and will walk all over your 8400GS.

pentium D = pentium 4 dual core - will run with pentium 4 motherboards but will be a lot slower than the core 2 duo range
pentium dual core e21x0 = cut down core 2 duo (lower cache) - will NOT run with pentium 4 motherboards

Confusion reigns heh

Yeah as Mattyrigby00 says, the Pentiums on OcUk won't work with your board. But the older ones that will work are hard to get hold of.

Eh thanks guys, I think I'll pass for now then until I have a bit more cash..

Keep going Cob, only 28 more posts until the 5k Mark :)

Just a quickie vaguely related to this topic. Does anybody know if a P4 560 would be compatible in my ASUS P5K3 mobo. On the specs of the mobo it says it supports P4, but doesnt give anything more specific. Should I therefore presume it does?

K3zzeR, you would also need to upgrade your RAM to DDR2 if you have not got DDR2 RAM already.

Ignore. You have DDR2 RAM. Apologies for my lack of observation.
