Hi, I have a portable motion detector camera that says it supports up to 32gb mini sd card and should be formatted in fat32 format.

I already have a 64gb card and am not too bothered if i lose half seems i already have a card but wondered if i format the 64gb card in fat32 format will it work but will only see 32gb and not 64gb? Or will it not recognise it at all?

Unfortunately the camera doesn't have a display so when i insert the card i have no real way of knowing if it’s seeing 32gb / 64gb or none.

Or would i be best just buying a 32gb card? i know they aren't expensive but i guessed i would just use the one i have if i can.

Regards

James

I would hazard a guess that it just won't be detected if it's too large, going on past experience with card devices. The only sure way is to try it, at worst it's just not going to work or will just throw some error at you. I assume the camera can't be firmware updated or similar?

32GB cards are cheap as cheap but for the most part other than the first generation hardware that supported 32GB for the first time most stuff that uses SD card storage actually supports atleast 64GB potentially upto 256GB though there might be some limitations depending on what storage format(s) are supported.

Same with devices that say they support 64GB often support upto 256GB and newer devices with upto 256GB will often do upto 1-2TB but probably haven't been tested for compatibility at the point the hardware was developed due to the SD cards with higher capacities not being available to test.

32gb are SDHC and above that is SDXC, they're different and the big one won't work. I've travelled down this road once myself.

Yeah older devices might not support SDXC but newer ones usually do even when they only say 32GB or 64GB, etc. unfortunately without testing it or finding someone else who has tested it you can't really be sure.
