Can I use a better wireless router with my Sky fibre connection?

Currently I'm using sky's 40Mb fibre VDSL connection and it uses two devices; the first one is a modem I think and that connects by ethernet to the Sagem router which my devices connect to. However the router very disappointing does not support 802.11n, so I was wondering if it was possible to use another router with it? (I know my pppoe login credentials). Or even better a device that could replace both devices, because atm I have 4 networking boxes when you include the 2 gigabit switches. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated guys. :)

You can use your own router, but Sky don't make things easy for you. In most cases it seems that tweaked firmware is required as Sky don't use PPPoE to make the connection.

There's a long running Sky thread in this sub-forum which should have covered this in some detail. There are also many useful threads on Sky's own forums. Googling 'Known Working Third Party Routers With Sky Fibre' would be a good start.

I thought I was going to have to sort this out for my sister, but she ended up with BT where you can use almost any router without any messing.

I've just noticed that sky do a "hub" thing which replaces both devices with one, not checked out the specs though yet, I've always been skeptical of hubs though tbh. :p

I know what you mean about Sky being awkward, I had to hack the connection username and password out of my old one in the pre fiber-days so I could setup my new one. I already have a better (DGN940) 802.11n router sitting around that I used to replace theur previous adsl2 router could that work?

I don't think they do (could be wrong). The only Sky hub I'm aware of only has an ADSL modem. Fibre uses a separate modem (OR) that plugs into a re-tasked LAN port on the hub.

If you've got an spare ADSL router you could reconfigure it as an access point, but it isn't going to replace what you've got at the moment.

Oh yeah just saw that. :(

So I can't replace the crappy sagem router wth anything better? That sucks, what about any firmware mods?

Like the idea of using the Netgear as an AP though, thanks?

The Sky "hub" still requires the OpenReach modem. It's an alright bit of kit in my experience, far more stable long term than the older Netgears/Sagems.

No GBe ports or dual band wireless, but those types of features are not on the radar of 99% of their customers.

You can replace the Sagem, you've just got to be careful what you choose. It's a common problem and Google finds plenty of information without too much effort.

Reconfiguring a router as an access point is fairly simple. It pops up on here regularly, and Googling 'router as access point' turns up loads of useful information and step-by-step guides.

Indeed. I'm doing this with a Linksys router (it's what was on offer that week) as a 5GHz AP.

Thanks, I'll see if I can replace the sagem with my 802.11n Netgear.

I already have the login details from the previous sky router, willl they have changed now I'm on vdsl?
