Probably going to get signed up with ntl and need to get a wireless router. From what I understand a cable router is just a router and an adsl router is a router with a built in modem? If I got an adsl router can I plug the cable modem into it and just not use the built in modem and use it as a plain router.

I am looking to possibly get one second hand and if I can use an adsl one it expands the models I can get.

thanks

It will work, Turn off the DHCP settings in the router, and the modem will act as the DHCP server for 32? IP's

To answer your question ... no. While it is possible to use it as a switch it's not possible to use it as a router. You always have the option of tracking down an adsl modem with an RJ45 connector though ... that would allow you to buy a router and then plug in either an adsl modem or cable modem. Then again for the cost involved for either a normal router and an adsl modem/ router being circa £30 for the low end of the market it may not be worth the agro ? Especially when a lot of ADSL ISP's will provide you with a wireless router free ?

It won't be running as a router though, just a plain old switch (ie no routing / NAT functionality)

ADSL modem will only route and handle translations from the WAN port

to plug a cable modem into an ADSL router, you'd have to use an RJ45 pathc lead, which as has already been posted, make it nothing more than glorified switch

ADSL modem has 1 WAN input (for phoneline) and 4 RJ 45 outputs, you can plug the RJ45 OUT of the cable modem into this, but like i said, its primarily an OUTPUT, so it wont handle NAT etc.. for it.
