Thinking can I use a Nikon Auto focus AFD lens (not G type) on an old manual focus film body like the FE2? (Obviously it won't auto focus ;)
Just thinking will the electrical contacts foul anything or get damaged, or rear element hitting the mirror etc, or did Nikon keep forward and backward compatibility going.

Would allow me to use newer lens manually on film body, saves doubling up!

You should be fine. The only lenses to be careful of are some fish eyes from the 60s (on digital).Otherwise you have 55 years of f-Mount lenses

Just picked up a FE2 with a 24 F2.8 Nikkor lens, was thinking to get a recent 50mm AFD F1.4 for my D7000 and also use it on FE2.... Similarly the manual 24mm lens can be used on the Digital body.... happy to back with Nikon :D

It's fine loads of people use AF-D lenses still on old and modern cameras, because they can change aperture in live view they are superior to the newer G lenses for video capture.

Thanks guys .... that link to Ken's site should be a sticky.... excellent info.

I've now done a "Buy it now" and bagged an excellent looking 50mm F1.4 AFD for £179 from a seller/shop on the auction site.

Ken has a lot of junk advice on his site, I would stay clear of anything else on there.

Sorry I do normally include a health warning when I post that article. Ken Rockwell has some odd views and I would take most of his reviews with a pinch of salt. I think in his spare time he might be Kwerk.

I was only referring to the table of data showing compatibility etc.. very handy reference and not to subjective ;)
Any way job done :)

Unfortunately he does have some great pages hidden between the trash, like the lens compatibility stuff.

In general you have to read careful what he says it the best lens/camera. He will often say A disposable kodak film camera is the best camera in the world ever, because it is small, light, pocketable, "FF sensor", you can zoom with your feet aand is good enough for his non-commercial work.:D
