Can it be done?!

I'm wondering if it's possible to get a full machine, high spec, 140mz 24'' monitor and windows 10 for around £1000? I want a machine that'll at least kick ass and deliver 300fps in CS:GO!

Am I going crazy to try and find that for £1000ish?!

Two main problems bringing that in on budget:

1. Monitor cost can be substantial for high refresh rates so this is eating up a lot of your budget - you could get a higher spec PC if you compromise on that, depends what is important to you...
2. GPU costs variable but you can probably get those frame rates with something in the £150-200 range

The rest is pretty possible given you won't be building anything too crazy, all depends what you mean by 'high spec' and whether you intend to build it yourself.

My friend has a 144mz monitor and they are amazing so I think I'm going to just put up with the £200 for the monitor.

Think I want an expensive GPU just for future proofing.

If I went high-spec, with windows and a monitor it's coming in at around £1400? That's about right isn't it ?

I'll be building it myself.

I wonder how long a £1500 PC would last for? Around 7 years I'm thinking?

That's very similar to what I specced up except I would probably spend another 2 ton on a GFX.

If I bought that machine would it be high-end and pretty decent for a few years or am I cutting back on too much>

It's a fine spec which will give you a good few years, but no it's not high end by any means.

Well it certainly wouldn't be low end, it could possibly be classified as mainstream. I think you would be fine for a while on this spec. You could get a 970 or 390 if you liked but the 390 uses a lot of power.

Personally, i would put a 970 or 390 gfx card in if i were building a current rig.

Not sure on the 550 watt psu, would aim for a 750 watt.

Similar price ;

Similar price but not similarly specced, why would you need a 750 w psu for a system that doesn't even draw 400 w ?Tested:

250 ish peak draw.. a 550w (which is rated over 600w fyi) is loads for that system, Sapphire themselves recommend 500w psu

Op estimated 1k for his overall build, a 970 or 390 would run it significantly higher

OP also mentioned this ;

In my opinion a 380 is not 'future proofing' ( not that that is really possible ) but a 380 is , at best, a mid range card and not what i would put in a new rig aimed at graphics performance.

And the psu was based on my gfx card recommendation, you could probably get away with a 650watt based on the power draw of a 390 @ ~ 300W (TDP)

Do you think that I should just go and get the 980 then ? Literally smash a few extra ton on it and have done with it?

Surely that'll give me a high-end PC?

I take it there's no need for an i7?

If I get all that stuff + 980, that'll last me for 5 years at top res?

Can't guarantee 5 years, but a 980 will see you good with all current games + a couple of years. And will also handle 1440p if you choose to upgrade your monitor in the future. The R9 Nano is also worth a look at.

Never scrimp on a PSU either, allow room for expansion

The build posted was to meet his original budget, the reason I went the freesync route with that budget, was so in other games even if fps dipped it wouldn't be as noticeable.

That psu I listed is more than adequate for that build.

@OP Future proofing is a myth, you can make yourself future compatible but never future proof.
You need to base your build on your needs as there will always be shoddy ports that the best of gpu's will struggle to max. That said the 980 is a great card I ran one since around June of last year and never had any trouble with any games. If you do choose to go the 980 route, that psu is still perfectly adequate but if you wanted to consider sli later a quality 750W PSU would suffice.

Also if you got nvidia choose a monitor that's not freesync..

Considering I've only played Counter Strike for the last 10 years, hopefully it'll be okay. Ha! You're right about the PSU.

I've specced everything up and with new mouse and keyboard it comes to about £1,400.

Just deciding whether to spend that or not or if I just have money burning a hole in my pocket ;(

The way I look at it, 1400 over 5 years is 280. That's not much surely?
