Hi all,

I was hoping someone could help me determine whether my blu-ray player can play Region 1 discs?

It's a Panasonic BDT260EB.

Reason for asking is that I want to buy the decent version of Gangs of New York, but it's only available in the USA.

The obvious solution would be to buy it and give it a go, but i'd rather save money if it was found not to work...! ;)

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Yeah , regional coding barely exists on blu ray . It was on dvd as back the day it took months sometimes for films to come to Europe from the USA in cinema, which had a knock-on effect with discs. Now its basically instant

Ah nice, that is the one! I might just take a punt on it based on it's listing there being region-free then.

Thanks Grimley and Talon :)

I would note that, due to the terms of their distribution licenses, there are a couple of production houses which are having their BDs check the country setting on the BD Player on top of the Region setting. So even if you can play Region A (numbered regions are for DVDs, the BD regions are A, B etc) there can be times then you still may not be able to play the disk.

This mostly affects US releases of Japanese properties due to them being significantly cheaper than the original Japanese release and Japan and the US being the same BD region (they weren't the same DVD region).

This shouldn't affect the OP with what he wants but is something which may need to be considered more in the future.

Hi guys, just to let you know I got the disc and it played perfectly! :)

So thanks very much for the advice. It looked cracking compared to the UK release!

MKV

Honestly although i have got a blue-ray player i always just rip it with the free http://www.makemkv.com/ as it always work really well and as long as you have got vlc even without the plugins and things it still woks however if that not your prefer d player then their is a south Korean free blue-ray player software.
so if it doesn't work just buy putting it in then like i said you can rip it and go to the lengths of burning it onto new blurays then all is good either way.i think. i hope. lol:D:)
