title says it all really... can memory thats rated at pc4000 be run at 3200s tighter timings??

eg;
can this:
OCZ 2GB PC4000 (CL 3-3-2-8 @ ddr500)

be ran at these timings:
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC3200 (CL 2-3-2-5 @ddr400)

???

Yep should work fine. PC4000 chips will probably be slightly better quality so should hit PC3200 timings absolutely fine.

It depends on the modules being the same in both sets though, in this case they probably are so shouldn't be a problem.

Some high speed/high latency modules won't run at tight timings even at PC3200 however (not so much now, but certainly a couple of years back).

So in general...

It's better to go for the pc4000 set if you can get them for the same ish price as the 3200s, as they should run tight 200mhz timings for stock cpu clocks but allow for overclocking potential.

Or is it not worth the hassle; as running memory on a divider doesnt effect AMDs performance and the tight timings may be of more benefit than the overclocked ram?

For AMD, tighter timings are more desirable than higher speed. But it's a balancing act between the two. Try and push the memory as much as possible (Speed wise) while keeping the timings tight and then slacken off the timings a notch at a time while raising the speed. Most non-value memory does 220mhz @ 2-2 (or 3)-2-5, after that you'll need to drop the timings - usually by 2.5-3-2-6 should get you to 250ish if you're lucky.

Only the very top 2ghz kits will keep to cas2 at 220. The only one i know that does that is the corsair 3500ll. 1gb kits can go fairly high now at tight timings

Yep true, figures I quoted were really for top end 1GB sticks or most 512MB sticks - most of them (except for BH5) won't hit above 220/225 @ 2-2-2-5. BH-5 will hit 250+ @ 2-2-2-5 but require an insane amount of voltage (3.4v usually) and need actively cooled.

Have you bought the pc4000 sticks?
If so, perhaps you could post your max speed at 2-3-2-5 :)

I'm testing the pc3200 version i got today, so glad it works in my mobo at 1T

No, I havent decided on brand or speed yet, hence this thread.

So far though I've read that timings are more important than small overclocks, so I think I'll be getting a 3200 set and run a divider.

It's either the OCZ or the Gskill zx stuff.

Another question though, memory bought in america on my travels should work fine back in england shouldnt it??
I think the ram is a bit cheaper over there so it would be a bonus if it did.

What motherboard do you use? I think i've read that the g.skill doesnt work well with Asus a8 mobos (possibly a8n-sli only, not sure)

It doesnt matter where you buy the RAM, there are no regional restrictions if thats what you mean.

My mobo is an MSI Neo2 Platinum. Runs crucial ballistix 4000 (512x2) at the moment.

Oh, and I know in general America is cheaper then the UK, but ram over there is half the price?!
That seems like a bigger difference than other components. An AMD 4000 is roughly the same price as it is in the uk.

It happens.... :)
A lot of stuff is cheaper in the US due to relative exchange rates - use to your advantage if you wish :) (I know I would!)
