Can Physical Memory Dump kill a HDD?

Hey, was referred to these boards by a friend so here i am :) . Earlier today i was helping a friend to transfer some files to his just reformatted computer then out of the blue the computer went from desktop to the "blue screen of death" with lots of writing and Beginning Physical Memory Dump at the bottom.

The hard drive is a brand new one which i bought from OC a while back but never used and ended up giving to him as i didnt need it. He reset the computer when the blue screen appeared then the computer wouldnt start for some time. When we managed to start it about 5 mins later it started saying "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" and when i insert the system disk and try to get into the recovery console it says that a drive with windows cannot be found. When i plug the HDD into my computer it also no longer comes up in My Computer. Is it possible that this blue screen error could have actually killed the HDD?

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks Blabs

Thought i would also add that a few mins before the blue screen appeared he tried to load a game and got the error "d3dx9_30.dll could not be found". Not sure if it is at all relevant but incase it is i thought i should mention it.

Thanks for the fast reply, now i think about it that obviously makes more sense. I guess the HDD was just faulty. Shame i didnt use it at the time and realise it was faulty before the guarantee ended  . Just one more thing to ask is that there's no way one of the other components in the comp could have in any way contributed to this is there? I only ask because his old HDD seemed to be the reason that his comp wasnt working in the first place and i dont wanna tell him to go buy a new one if theres any chance that something else is damaging them.

I cant reinstall windows because the HDD isnt recognised by his computer nor mine. Could anyone clarify if any of his components could have caused the HDD to bust?

is the hard drive picked up by the bios?

only way i can think of for any of the other components to damage the drive would be a power spike from the psu which is unlikely unless the psu was faulty

As binary has stated, is the drive being picked up by the BIOS? If not, looks like something has gotten screwed. If it is being picked up, but Windows Setup wont install to it, try using a Disk Diagnostic tool. All HDD manufacturers should have their own little utilities which are normally found on their websites. They generally take the form of a small bootable program you run from a floppy/USB drive/CD/whatever. They will scan the drive and attempt to find any problems.

I should warn you that if you intend to do this on your own computer it does carry a small risk - you could inadvertantly nuke your own HDD. So my advice would be to remove any other HDDs before testing the one at fault.

if you read the bsod error is will almost always tell you what is at fault.

always read the bsod.
