Hi Guys,

Odd problem on a friends PC. Can ping the router, can ping web addresses and they resolve and reply fine, but both Internet Explorer and Firefox will not display any external web addresses.

Status bar will say opening page and then done, but the page stays blank!

Also, applications such as AVG, spybot etc cannot update over the web.

Any ideas!?

Thanks,

Mal

As you are behind a router first thing I would do is reboot the router and then next is diable any local software firewall on the machine.

Next would be check what DNS servers the router is using.

Done done done and done.

I've changed the DNS to a few different ones, no difference.

I forgot to say, other devices connected to the router work fine!

Have you looked in
IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connections Tab>Lan settings.

Making sure it is not trying to connect to a proxy or anything.

Not Vista64 (Or XP 64, but thats less likely) is it?
If so, try with the 64 bit IE in the start menu & see if that works. If so, then you've been hit by the 32-bit application bug.

Hi

Can you outline WHAT you have done and also what firewall and AV is on the machine.

The other devices that work fine ? what do you mean by devices are these computers ?

What IP are you getting locally from the router ? and what is the IP of one of the devices working OK

I have seen this twice before, wasted hours on it the first time. A repair install of XP is the fastest fix I know of, but if you resolve it another way I'd like to know how.
