Can SATA II Drives be connected to SATA?

Hi everyone,

Can you tell me if SATA II drives can run on SATA connectors, I realise that they will only run at SATA I speeds. Im just trying to future proof myself a bit by buying SATA II instead of SATA. Any view greatly appreciated.

Yes.

Some drives (such as Samsung) need a jumper in place on the drive though.

Yes, the stickey that Smids pointed out is very helpful.

In nearly all cases there's no problem at all, the drives auto-negotiate. On some SIS or VIA chipsets or controller chips a jumper needs to be set on some drives. So far I haven't come across any incompatibility problems.
