I missed the point as well. It turns out that you're actually the bad guy. At the very end when you run back across the level from right to left, if you think about it, the knight is actually rescuing the princess from you.
Must admit, I was too busy watching my character avoid the obstacles to notice that the princess is actually flipping the switches etc to try and trap you during that final rewind.
It's a very hard story to understand, and even harder if you havent got the alternate ending from collecting the hidden stars.

It's the story of the creation of the atomic bomb. The princess is the bomb, and Tim is it's creator. The game and gameplay relate little to the story apart from it's thoughts. (What if it were possible to rewind time? What if it were possible to be in two places at once, all come up in the story).
