So Marvel is pretty simple, everything (TV and Film) is in the same universe. Job done.

But DC is... not so clear.

Arrow, the Flash, Super Girl and Legends of Tomorrow are all the same universe, right?

And Batman vs Superman, Wonder Woman, and Justice League are all the same universe.

But the former isn't the same universe as the latter (clearly, as it has the same chacters but played differently by different people)? Correct?

What about Gotham, is that anywhere in the 2 above universes, or is it on its own?

Is Man of Steel part of the same film universe as Justice League, etc?

And what about Suicide Squad? Its got the same characters as Arrow but is clearly different. Is it the same universe as Batman vs Superman? I heard Batman is in it, but is that Ben Afleck, or another one?

I think there is 2 universes (TV and Movie), and then Gotham sort of doing its own thing, but Suicide Squad has thrown me a bit.

Anything else I've missed?

The movies are all separate from the TV and cartoon movies.
The TV stuff is all set in the same universe.

All the current DC movies are part of their own but same Universe.

B
Ben Affleck Batman, Henry Cavil, and Suicide Squad are all set as the same version of there characters.

So Gotham is the same universe as Arrow/Flash/Super Girl/LoT?

Gotham feels very different to those. Its deliberately period agnostic (a lack of use of computers, minimal use of phones but small mobiles when they do appear, and 70s style vehicles, etc).

Gotham is its own thing.

Also supergirl is in an alternate earth version of the same universe as flash/arrow et al.

Ben affleck is in suicide squad and justice league as the same batman.

That depends on the comic, you might be remembering Keatons Batman that had a 50s kinda American style about it.

In BvS Gotham is as modern as everywhere else except for the fact Batman is breaking bones every night.

In Some comics Gotham does exists in the same universe. Film wise I guess it depends on them.

Hang on nevermind, I forgot Gotham was a TV series that you are talking about, my bad, I dont watch it so have no clue.

Technically Supergirl is a parallel Universe to Arrow/Flash/Legends of Crap.

Oh? I thought there was a crossover episode? I've not watched the latest series of Flash or any of Super Girl, but my GF has.

You should give Gotham a go, its pretty good. The first half of series 2 is proper awesome.

Side note, Suicide Squad looks pretty self contained. Can I watch it having not seen Man of Steel or Batman vs Superman? Neither of those, nor Wonder Woman or Justice League really interest me, but Suicide Squad looks fun.

What have I missed? :p

Well X-men and Deadpool are in the same universe which is not in the same universe as the main MCU (Avengers etc)

The Netflix shows are kind of in the MCU but it's basically their own pocket and I'm not sure they'll ever interact with the rest of it, just each other.

Then of course Fantastic Four isn't part of the MCU.

I'm sure there is something I'm forgetting.

DC is pretty much one for TV, one for films. Except Gotham because that is so much earlier in time. I think Suicide Squad is still part of the film universe.

The Flash was in an Episode of Supergirl because he accidentally went to a parallel universe while training to be faster. They then used the episode to explain there is no Metropolis or Super{wo}man in Barry Allen's universe.

Ah yeah those. I mean from the franchises that are being made by the same people to try and be part of the same universe(s).

So the Marvel universe is 1 universe, TV and Film, while DC is 2 universes, one for TV and another for Film, and then they both have their outliers that use characters from the comics but aren't connected and/or are made by different people (Fantastic 4, X Men, Gotham, etc).

K, think I got it.

Wait, Spiderman in Civil War isn't Spiderman from Amazing Spiderman, is it? They just got the rights to use the character, but not tie it to the Amazing Spiderman films?

Yes Sony had the rights when Marvel sold them off as they where losing a lot of money at that time.

Sony put out the Amazing Spiderman movies as they would loose the rights " Use it or lose it", springs to mind. So Marvel made a deal to get it off Sony's hands as there where ruining the character.
So in Civil War that was a mini introduction for the new actor playing Peter Parker, showing Marvel got him back, and will star in his own movie called Spiderman Homecoming.

Its also why Fox put out that terrible Fantastic Four movie.

Then it probably still isn't for you, it's fun, it's certainly better than it was, but it's still taking huge liberties with just about every non-original character.
