Can someone explain directx10 to me please?

Hi there, can you please help me to understand how directx10 works because I have crysis beta installed, and also lost planet extreme condition, and I can run them both in directx10.

I am running XP, but I also have vista installed as a secondary operating system.

Can directx10 be installed on xp or just vista? and do you need a graphics cards that supports it? and if so does mine support it?

My card is: Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail

Also it does not need to be installed on Vista it already has DX10. XP Is only DX9. Your card is only DX9 compatible.
