I'm quite confused on a few things so could someone kindly put me out of my misery. :p Sorry for all these questions below.

I'm getting changed to 60mb on friday with VM and their wireless superhub. Will I actually get 60mb wireless or does it need to be wired? From what I've read, several people report they're getting much less than 60mb wirelessly, like 25 to 30mb.

Will the engineer fit a wireless card into my PC or some sort of wireless dongle into my ethernet port?

I've got a wireless TP-link router, 300Mbps. Currently my 10mb VM cable modem is connected to the router and the router is connected to my PC. So I get wi-fi to my phone and laptop. And full 10mb speed to my desktop.

Would it be better for me (or the engineer when he comes) to connect the superhub the same way so that I'm wired rather than wireless to get the full 60mb to my desktop, and let my own router do the wifi to my laptop and phone? But if my wifi router and laptop card are both 300mbps, does that mean I get 60mb to my desktop but much much less to my laptop?
 
300mb will be the wireless speeds, not the internet speeds. But this is also affected by the network adapter on the device and distance.

Best way to ensure you get the full 60mb speeds is via wired. On the other hand the superhub's wireless is pants, so they've released a firmwire update which allows you to stick it in modem mode and use your own router for wireless. I would do this if your current wireless router does the job.
 
Wireless speed seems to be a bit of a myth.

Speeds are promised, but these speeds are the potential maximum. But they are affected by so many different factors that it seems they are almost impossible to achieve.

Distance, construction of your house, layout of your house, equipment in use in your house etc.. all can reduce your speeds.

I would always choose wired over wireless if both are available.

If you have your desktop plugged in via ethernet, you will get your full 60Mb/s speed on your desktop.

The VM superhub is a router, so you will have no need for your existing one. Its a cable modem and router in one. Just plug your desktop into it, and then let your laptop connect to it via wifi. As for whether you will get your full 60Mb/s to it using wireless, its impossible to say.

Its worth noting that i have the 100Mb/s package, and if i set my Macbook right next to the router, i can get close to that speed. I have absolutely no hope of getting that speed outside in the garden however, although i will still get a usable connection.

Your wireless speed is never "fixed" at one specific rate ,can be reduced even by sitting next to a cordless DECT phone, as they use similar frequencies.

Ok cool, I'll just make sure the VM router is wired and as you say let the laptop connect by wifi.
 
Well, engineer has been and installed the new superhub. Still getting 10mb and the engineer reckons I need to give it 24 hours because VM need to make the switchover. I thought it would change to 60mb right now while the engineer was here.

Today I'm only getting between 3 and 4mb/s download speeds, but I guess it must be because it's the weekend and quite busy. Tried some torrents to see if I could get the 6mb/s. Most I got was 5mb/s very briefly but it was averaging around 3.5mb/s. I'll see if I can get 6 during the week.

Anyway, something odd when doing the same broadband speedtests as in my screenshots via wi-fi on my laptop. All tests are showing the download speeds, but returning errors and not completing the upload part of the test, as if they can't read my upload. I've sent a test 10mb file from laptop to a friend on MSN, so it's obviously not actually blocking uploads. My phone does the speedtests fine using wi-fi to the superhub. So it looks like the superhub is working ok.

I unplugged the ethernet cable from my desktop and connected it to my laptop. Now the laptop is wired and the speedtests all work fine, download and upload.

So I can't figure out why the upload part of speedtests fail on laptop wireless.
 
3 or 4 Mbps download from a 100Mbps connection? Either something is very wrong or you're confusing Mbps and MBps.

60Mbps = 7.5MBps (max theoretical), if you don't use the capital B for megabytes, people will tend to assume mb = megabits when talking about networking.

I have a 60Mbps connection. Thanks for correcting me on MB and mb, I always get confused on those. So yeah, I was getting 3 to 4MB/s. I thought 60Mbps = 6MB/s max? Anyway, I've not yet experienced 6 to 7.5MB/s, so I'm assuming it's because it's the weekend and a lot of people using the network? Right now, all my speedtests are giving me around 30Mbps connection speed, whereas this morning it was 59Mbps.

60 megabits = 7.5 megabytes

All well and good but you have overheads. You will never get 7.5MB/Sec out of a 60Mb/Sec line.

I get 16Mbit/Sec (~2MB/Sec) MAX out of an 18.6Mbit/Sec line for example.

O'Rly? :p

Took a few minutes to get there though, and average was 3.3. If you hadn't mentioned to me that my line is capable of 7MB/s +,
I'd have been shocked to see my test torrent doing beyond what I thought was 6Mb/s maximum.
I'm really pleased though. Mind you, this is at 4 in the morning as well so better speeds I guess.

Yeah they connect a little over what they say it will connect at. I think they brought this in when 20mb was launched as it used to connect at the exact speed iirc. My 30mbit is connected at 33.3.
