It’s been a while since I purchased any upgrades so I’ve lost track of what’s out there and need some advice on which card would be best.

My friend is running an X800 on a 37”LCD TV and as you can probably imagine it barely runs the Internet so he’s decided on an upgrade. Its not going to used for FPS games but possibly simulation (Not including FSX). I was thinking something like:

BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC2 768MB GDDR3
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 512MB GDDR3

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Sparco.

Videocard power is not required for 2D in Windows use. If you can't browse the net on anything faster than a 300mhz Pentium II, then the fault isn't the videocard, it's something else.

I would expect 1024x768. Though it could be 1900x1080.
As above if it cant run internet explorer. Its probably not the graphics card. What is his whole set-up?

If it's a LCD it'll be 1366x768, or 1920x1080. I'm running dual screen, 1680x1080 and 1920x1080 on a ATI X300 and no slow downs (for GUI use)

I'd go for a GTS for your screen res (if its normal HD)

or the BFG GTX is better choice ifyour screen is FullHD - just dont get OcUK's own GTX, it sucks lol

I got a 850 in a media center pc at 1360/768 and runs perfect even got vista on the pc.Before that i had a x300 and that run the pc fine.Of cause not gaming wise the x300 but internet and watching a film np at all not great but ok.I even play the odd game of cod2 on it with the x850 in it and np at all.Cant see it being the card it has all the power you need to run explorer and more.

All I can remember is its got 2GB Ram, 3700+ San Diego 400W PSU. Not sure of the motherboard I will be able to have a look later and post a bit more info.

The TV is a Panasonic th37tx70b, Plasma not LCD like I said in my earlier post.

Off the subject a little bit, when I scroll down the whole page flickers, I’ve made sure the drivers are up to date which didn’t fix the problem.

I had that card ..the card will be plenty powerful enough for browsing - ran perfectly for me.

If you're fancying a new card you not considered the 3870x2 then - hold on your cpu would bottleneck that card for sure.

My lcd and my tv no matter what card flicker at times well on some webbys. EG. xbox-scene.com the sides of the page flash flicker alittle when i scroll fast. But tbh i dont have that problem with the forum.Just the odd webby. But as said the cards you picked will be more than he/she needs.X2 would be a no no with that psu not 100% but dont think i would trust it.GT would be all he needs or a cheaper 3xxx ATI model no need for that power if its just the odd sim.But i would just stick with the x800 unless i wanted to play the lastest games.

mine did the same before on my old card.. just clean your drivers and re-install them. that fixed the problem for me

Naa u try the webby its a clean install m8ty its not bad you can just see the the black lines on the side as u scroll fast flash alittle.I got 3 pc's and all of them have the same sort of flash/flicker with my TV or LCD whack my old monitor and no sign of it.If you have been a lcd person for sometime dont think you even see that type of thing any more its normal. And as said its just the odd one and could well be as badbob said texture and background of the site but as said on my monitor np at all.

seconding the comment that the cpu would bottleneck the system too much - an 8800GTS / GTX would therefore be a waste of money.

However... an upgrade along the lines of mine... E2180 processor overclocked to 3.2ghz / Gigabyte P35 mobo / Inno 8800GT 512mb wouldn't break the bank, and it runs fantastically at my res of 1440x900

edit: just noticed my sig is out of date ;)
