can someone spec me please

I don't like cheap MSI AMD boards, but yeah, that is a better option than the cheapest Gigabyte. Basically if a board has a 4+1 phase design it's going to struggle with the 6300/8300 CPUs and generate a lot of heat - and if there's no heatsink, the board can even fail. The Gigabyte board doesn't even bother listing support for the 8320/8350 as it'd be so poor with it.

The cheapest decent board is the GA-970A-UD3 - it has an 8+2 design and is heatsinked.

So to sum things up for the OP, he can get a £400 6300 + used GPU build, but the OC will be limited. Or up the Budget to £450 and get a 6300 + used GPU + cooler, that will OC very well.

That's it. An overclocked 6300 is really quite impressive (and very underestimated), one reason I favour the better board.

They are. Since at stock clocks they're slightly higher clocked than an 8320, for games that use 4 or fewer cores, they can outperform the stock 8320 (due to the design it's not always that simple). And most modern games use 4 cores, older ones 2. Crap like WoW, 1 :)

I would recommend finding a used 5850/5870/6850/6870 (AMD) or 460 1GB/560/560ti (Nvidia). Could easily find one on a well know auction site or similar for £50-60.

Any of those should be decent and run on that 500w PSU.
