Can someone take a look at this damaged chip please?

Will this chip work ok? Or is it too damaged? It's a 1.6GHz INTEL PENTIUM M PROCESSOR SL7EG 2Mb CACHE

I bought this for a mate of mine off ebay. The seller assured me it was in excellent condition.

He does have a 30 day exchange/refund policy but we're happy to keep it if the damage won't affect anything.

Thanks

well you can always try it, if it works ok then fine but if it fails in the 30 days then send it back. ive seen worse that worked ok

it looks like someone didnt have the cooler on properly and chiped the edge of the core!

The problem being that it's for a laptop so it's a bit more fiddly than a desktop.

He reckons it has been tested.

Not sure I trust him now though as he considers that to be excellent condition

it should be fine mate, i had a Pentium M from a lappy & the core was chipped far worse than that, i had no problems with it what so ever. seeing as how he's got a 30Day exchange/refund policy i really wouldn't even give it a seconds thought tbh.

just email the seller and send him a picture, saying this is how i got it, if it doesn't work i will be sending you it back...

(only say it a little more politely)

i dont think this is a stability issue at all

imo if it turns on it is fine.
It can be as the chip could only of damaged certain parts of the chip that a used during certain operations, but it may still be able to do enough to bring up a post screen and load windows

Is impossible to say from looking at a chip whether it is damaged or not - it needn't be, but it might be. Having that mark there is possibly a sign it's been generally mistreated anyway. The only thing you can do is photograph it as you've done and then test it. Prime95 would be a good idea.

CPU's are ridicuousley resilient, my Athlon XP had chips galore, my A64 mobile 754 had a whole corner missing, and I managed to slice off a whole resistor on my current opteron, all work perfectly :D

...

Yeah seriously, stay away from the heatspreaders or CPUs without them :p

they are more resillient than you think

that chip is NOWHERE near the core in relative terms!

many years left it that baby, give a knock with a chisel before you put it in for good measure. :D

PS Wear a wooly jumper and dance while installing it!

EXTREME CPU INSTALLING!

i chipped the corner of my xp1700....one dead 1700+ :/ it was only a small chip as well lol

Did you use a sledge hammer to take that IHS off?

Looks like the mess on the end of my toe nail after i walked into the fire place

Pretty col though. OT, what clocks you get out of it?

I did this to my Opteron 146 - note the 3 resistors sliced off the left hand side during IHS removal. Works fine, in fact works better !!! LOL

no changes whatsoever with it? voltage wise or even stablity? as that is surprising if 3 resistors can be chopped off with no apparent damage.
