I just drove past a speed camera van which had solid rear doors (the doors where closed) the van and the operatives where facing me and i drove past them at around 40mph in a 30.

My question is can these vans do you with hand held devices facing you , through the windscreen?

Don't think they're allowed to do it through glass.

Were they pointing a speed gun at you?

I cant be certain but the guy was waving his arms about in the passenger seat..

Its quite possible they where taking a break before hitting the road... I hope my lucks in.

The whole way down the road as well I was doing a steady 30 it was only when I left the roundabout i sped up... grrgh

I'm 99% sure that you are safe :)

The odd thing about the van was the back doors where solid ie no windows or openings.. Just the 2 guys at the front giving me the eye waving there arms about. Not sure if they where holding a handheld speed gun or not!

It was probably one of the vans where they have to get the camera out and put it on the tripod thing, they were probably just on a break or had only just arrived. They don't have laser or radar guns like the police have.

some do it through the side window. Do cops even use hand held ones anymore?

Yup, drove past one a couple of weeks ago. I know they have to do it to hold the thing steady but the stance they use with one arm resting on the other, one eye squinting down the sights always makes me chuckle :p

How does it work? Do they take a picture using the hand held device or do they have a police car that lies in wait?

BeatMaster :D

Some vans do have solid doors. They open them and film out of the back.

When I was in Blackpool a few weeks back all of the ones I saw around there had solid doors which were fully opened when the van was in use.

i just had a look at what one offence does to my insurance , increases it by £90 per year for the next 3 years and then some ofr 2 more years. Crazy!

Crafty little beggers! Don't they have to show a sign or make is obvious that they are doing speed checks?

Nope that law changed iirc.

Many insurance companies will not charge for 3 points, as everyone(ok not everyone but a lot) has them. Esure is one of them iirc.
