can they really tell if its been oc'd?

It should be fine, but if you've replaced the HSF then your warranty will be void.

I heard that some manufacturers can tell by taking samples of the thermal paste, apparently it leaves some sign of overheating but this could be caused by anything not just overclocking so it's nothing really to worry about.

What if you stick the original heatsink back on? Will they check the thermal paste to see if it's the same type the factory used?

I imagine it's about the thermal paste, but I don't have any experience of this really apart from what I've read on here and I can't even remember :p

I'm not. Just wanna know how I stand in the event of 7900GT sudden death syndrome cos I have put a vf900 on it & have kept the stock hsf just in case.

You have voided your warranty, so if it breaks, whatever the cause. Its your problem not theres.

does anyone know the actual legalities of warranties & putting a 3rd party heatsink on?

if you put the origional hsf back on properly and the main fault isnt anything connected with that part then shouldnt the warranty should be honoured?

if you bought a brand new car, switched exhausts but then the steering goes the garage cant void your warranty because of the exhaust mod.... or can they?

is it the same with cpu's aswel? even tho the warrenty policy says "overclocking will void your warrenty"

when they have no idea if the problem is due to an overclock

Couldn't be further from the truth. When replacing a HSF it is incredibly easy to damage the card. Putting it in car terms would be like this... you replace the brakes YOURSELF then the brakes fail because you installed them wrongly and you write off the car.

maybe you didnt read my post correctly
I`m asking if a card is faulty (not neccasarily the ops) and it has nothing to do with an hsf removal (then why should the warranty be void just becasue of the hsf removal?

and of course if you tampered with a cars brakes then they failed it would be your responsibility - but you havent grasped what i`m asking again
ok maybe cars are not a good example but you must see the point i`m trying to put across.
Do the likes of intel void warranties on failed cpu`s if you havent used their hsf? i doubt it, so why are gfx cards different?

JBuk, it's just the way it is. Doing certain things with a graphics card voids warranty, and those include replacing the stock cooler, overclocking, and BIOS flashing.
