First Overclock and not sure which is the best way to approach this with my set up as follows. I have read somwhere that the Athlon 64 can't be overclocked due to some form of restriction on upwards overclocking...???

Asus A8N-E Motherboard
NVidia 4 Chipset
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
2gb Corsair matched 400 mem
Nvidia GeForce 7300GT

CPU & Mem all set to auto in bios.

Appreciate incremental and test is a good apporach but tips on CPU voltage , multiplier etc etc appreciated

According to CPU-ID my current settings are:

CPU Clocks

Core Speed 2211.5mhz
Multiplier x11
Bus Speed 201 mhz
HT Link 1005 mhz
Voltage 1.395 V

Memory

PC3200
Freq 200mhz
CAS Latency 3.0
RAS to CAS 3
RAS Precharge 3
+RAS 8
Voltage 2.5 v

from what ive read around this forumn your 4200 should overclock without too much hassle unlike my current 4400+. I belive its something to do with the L2 caches between these cpus as your's only has 2x 512mb it apparently overclockes easier than mine's.
i have managed to get my cpu to 2475 Mhz with a small increase on the cpu vcore which is stable as ive run both mem test and ortos for 12 hours without any error's.

you should beable to take the fsb upto 220mhz straight away and it should be stable after which try and then increase it by 5 mhz at a time. if you find it boots but not to windows then try adding a little more v core voltage to the cpu there is a sticky at the top of the overclocking forum with lots of information that can help you

you should be able to clock your cpu past 2500mhz how much further will all depend on your cpu and memory.

Yes you should be able to overclock your cpu, I currently have my 3700 @ 2.8 with a nudge of vcore added. Max load temp (using prime) of about 55oC.

You can start on 220mhz.

I just added 5mhz to the bus speed, run something like prime for 10 - 15 mins briefly, then add another 5 and did the same until you get to about 2.6 and then run prime for a an hour or so, if its ok then keep going until it fails. When it does fail up the vcore a bit and run prime again. When it keeps failing and you can't up the vcore (due to temps or not enough options etc...) then you have hit the max, thats when you should run prime for 6 - 8 hours.

Note: whilst running prime keep an eye on your temps, people say the max temp you should go to is 60oC but i tend to keep mine below 55oC.

Hope this helps.

Ah..ok.

I have an option called "AI Overclocker" in the bios which claims to auto up the performance by 10% but according to CPDID there is no change so I'll ignore that one and do the manual changes

Thanks guys..is that Sir Les (Ferdinand ?)..surely not....:)

I will download Othos and Prime so I can run the tests.

i've tried increasing the vCore to 1.5 but have not done much with the bus speed...so here I go.

I'll post when I've done it...

Interesting............

CPU Freq: 225
PCI Express Lock: 108mhz
DDR Voltage: 2.8v
CPU Voltage: 1.425v
Hyper Transporter: : 4x

Bios shows CPU speed as 2475mhz...which is above 10% above stock but CPU-ID and Othos say it is 2216mhz...which is stock. Which is correct ?

If I change the CPU Freq to , say, 230mhz the CPU speed goes up to 2557 mhz in the bios but the system locks on reboot.

just a tip.... you need to lock the pci express in the bios to 100, it might start causing you problems (i see its at 108 above).

225x11 = 2475 so i would say your bios is. The reason it may be lower according to cpu-id is cool and quiet (which want to disable in bios)

cpu voltage is still quite low, try bumping it up one more notch.

How are your temps under load ?

hope this helps.

Once again thanks guys....I've read the superb stickies but there is no substitute for tinkering and then asking questions...much appreciated. I have disabled cool& quiet. Good tip on the pci speed..should have left one alone..I'll give the vcore a boost and see what happens.

Temps are around the mid 40s running othos....

More later....

whats the reason for you overclocking? Don't get me wrong, I always overclock but if it is to make games run faster then you need to change the 7300 gt. Your CPU at stock is more than enough to keep a 7300 happy and overclocking it won't do much for games

Thats a very good question.....

Mainly to see what I can do. I have played Crysis and Medal of Honour 4 on my stock system without any problems at all...they both ran brilliantly. The 7300GT coped well and I was more than happy with the graphics quality and speed of refreshes, detail etc etc. I am very picky with what games I play and prefer the FPS games or the strategy games like C&C...the latter doesn't need state of the art technology of course, just something decent.

My son has just bought a 3.0ghz Intel quad core CPU and a whizzy MBD and has clocked that already..I think to about 3.5 0r 3.75 ...so his PC goes like lightning. However, he has a PS3 and a Wii to play games on so I think for him it was just the challenge...which it was for me.

It would appear that 2.475ghz is the best I can get so far and I will leave it at that. I'm a bit disappointed not to get much more but from reading the various threads it seems that certain CPU/MBD conbinations are better than others for overclocking without much risk.

In some repects it seems the best way to get better performance is just to buy bigger, faster components....but all you get is a PC that boots a bit quicker.......unless youn play lots of demanding games and burn lots of DVDs of course.....

Its still fun though, overclocking......
